Accurately cutting styrene rod and tube?
« on: June 30, 2010, 10:35:32 AM »
HI guys

I'm looking for a very accurate way to cut styrene tube that creates a square end, but also enables repeatable lengths to be cut.
I'm cutting rod from 1.2mm diamter up to 3.2, and hollow tubes from 2.4mm diameter up to 5.5mm.

I'm already using one of these.

While its great for cutting the smaller diameters it 'wanders' while cutting the thicker tubes, which leaves an angled cut.

I've seen this....

but at £40 its expensive to buy without some sort of recommendation. Anyone used one regularly?

What about one of those little hobby miter boxes and saw.  Might be a little slow but I'd think with styrene it would just take a couple swipes.

I have the latter and I am very satisfied with it. Keep in mind that it uses a razor, not a saw, so it is not ideal for thicker  pieces accurately. A drawback is that it uses a

I have another mitre saw from Xacto which employs a razor saw. I use this for thicker styrene and wood.

yeah - i suspect that a razor blade is just being asked to do a little too much on the thicker tubes so it wll have to be a saw.

I have a few hundred of these to do accurately so I was hoping for something easier.

Jed responded over on frothers too.

Thanks guys.
