How will you do the train rails? You have the sleepers sorted already. Settled on narrow gauge?

I can do half an hour or so before having a break but too much isn't a good thing. I also have drawing to do for work so it's all a bit piece meal at the moment. What you see here is several days of intermittent work (realistically, it could've been done in less that half a day bearing in mind the main construction was already complete months ago).

I've already got the train sorted and obviously the rails are determined by that. On hindsight, maybe having the sleepers already down wasn't such a great idea as one method I thought of was to have rails as long as possible to help join the different sections together (therefore the sleepers would've joined the rails together).

As its a gaming piece and not a railway model the train doesn't have to run so having rails on each section I think is the better compromise. I've got several types of rail; the original ones from the kit but there isn't enough, brass rails from the model shop but these are prone to warping when their sleepers are taken off and the final one is plastic girder extrusion, which is probably the best option and with the help of a jig to keep them even will hopefully provide what I need.

I'll also be looking for tiny rail ties to help attach the rails to the sleepers as I think just gluing direct to the sleepers won't be enough.

It'll be a while before the rails go on though, I'll probably do a sample first to test it

I dug the neff docking station out from the cupboard a couple of weeks ago and have been working on it intermittently.

Time to show the limited progress. Originally it was going to be stucco but since I started it (several years ago  ) the view for Mars has changed a bit so it's entirely made from stone instead and should be quite imposing on the tabletop 

Firstly, the bridging section at the bottom will have a big metal door.



There will also be a brick lighthouse on the top (just because)



I've done some simple patterned stone work on the top and the two platforms will have a couple of quick firers on each one.




Every big bloody structure needs guns so I thought some casemates would be in order. They need some lintels and the styrene/metal will be green in keeping with everything else but hopefully you get the idea.





Still undecided as to the form that the door and dock will take, the eastern style arch cut out was the original idea but it'll have to be different to keep the style the same. I'll get it eventually

Jim Bibbly:  How do you get clean seams/joins on the corners of your stone plastic sheets?  I have often wrestled with this problem.  I love this thread by the way and am always amazed at the museum quality of your game boards.

Stunning work! One of the other things I really liked about your Mars terrain is the colours; the reds and browns give a Martian feel while still looking 'natural', if that makes sense.

For the ones that are done you mean? The stone courses match as they go round a corner (the stone sheet doesn't have even courses which means a lot of scrap) and when two side meet I use watered down wall filler (the white stuff) to fill in the joins. Looking at them you can tell the texture is a bit different. I'm going to give it a go with liquid green stuff to see if that works any better (could get expensive if it does  ). Hope that makes sense 

Table is booked for Salute and it is bigger but different. More on this next year
