Glory of the Sun cavalry due for release soon.
« on: 07 October 2010, 02:48:43 AM »
Looks like the Sun King and his best enemies are back from the dead. In Mark Copplestone's own words :

"GLORY OF THE SUN

The first cavalry and dragoon minatures for our 1665-1680 Glory of the Sun range will finally be production-moulded next week with release in the week beginning 18th October.  This batch will include several varieties of buff-coated cavalry and mounted and dismounted dragoons."

No pics for the time being, but hopefully we should get some pretty soon.

Excellent news, methinks  :)

Better late than never. The last newsletter said Sept, so I suppose my patience will stretch a little further. Hopefully he won't forget the Spanish he promised last year. They really are indispensible for the period and because they are so colourful would be a joy to put on the table. This might just see the Copplestones hit the streets before Front Rank's slightly later period additions reach us.

I have been hankering after this range for a while, some Spaniards would be good as they will make a nice foil for my Tupi and such and can also double up for pirate games to boot :D as a nice change from 16th century fayre

How would late 17thC Spaniards make suitable opponents for Tupi? Am I missing something here?

Well I am actually thinking more akin to (Pseudo Portuguese) to fight the Guarani as I have a goodly pile of London Waroom Tupi who are sitting there awaiting to be claims as something other than Tupi to be honest :D

Ok. Well if you are looking for Portuguese for the campaigns along the Paraguaçu or more generally for the late 17th C I suspect you would be better off looking either at Brigade's King Phillip's War range, with suitable modification or the 'Dutch' figures in the existing Copplestone range.

The Spanish uniform for the period was fairly distinctive as it featured a sort of full length lapel down the front of the coat. Add to that most of the fighting against the indigenous population, whether in Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul or elsewhere was being conducted by Paulistas or bandeirantes with maybe a few militia for expeditions, so the scruffier, style of the Brigade figures probably makes a better start point. These are the figures I've had in mind for the expeditions against Zumbi and the Quilombo dos Palamares, which is in and of itself a fascinating study. You could mix in some of the Foundry maroons on both sides for that ( just modify most of the the firelocks to look like matchlocks).

By the way if you want another use for your Tupi figures , use them as allies or enemies of the Dutch for the early to mid 17th C. Quite a bit of TAG's TYW range is suitable for this, along with various ECW ranges.

Yes it is something I am toying with Carlos I have a lot of Tupi around 60 from each company; Copplestone, Eureka and LWR also I have 60+Aimore

Currently finishing off the "French" for the 16th C using a mix of Foundry swash bucklers/Eureka and other bits and bobs, then onto the Portuguese which will mostly be Eureka (they do some cracking Paulistas/Mamelucos) together with Foundry African Slaves.

I havent finished these yet lol but was looking at other opportunities, The Guarani war of 1732 is a bit late too for this but I havent seen anything around I would use for this and 1750 with the treaty (as in the Mission film) is too close to my FIW interests.

I did consider the Eureka ragged continentals but again too late to be truely useful.

To be honest its the lure of shiny lead :D

Eureka are/were/ going to do 18th C Spaniards, the requisite numbers were ordered but I've no idea how far down the line that is, I had the better part of a 100 so on order myself.  For 1732 I'd be inclined to use WSS troops, the Portuguese were mnotable spend thrifts when itcame to uniforms and kit.  1750s, some of the Eureka WAS Dutch might work as Portuguese.

It's a great pity nobody does the Guiacurus, almost without doubt the most colourful ethnic grouping, most proficient warriors and fantastic horsemen to boot. There's a very good film, Brava Gente Brasiliera, about the conflict in the 1770s, well worth tracking down. The storming of the fort will appeal to you if you have a F&IW interest. Perry AWI figures are almost perfect for the Portuguese in this period. If you are really anal just add a small epaulette to the right shoulder.

And they're finally out, folks :

According to the Copplestone Castings newsletter,

"The mounted dragoons come with separate scabbarded swords and the cavalry with separate carbines (a mixture of flintlocks and wheellocks) and scabbards. GS21 represents a standard type of well-equipped cavalryman you might see in any army of the Dutch or Scanian Wars.  As with the infantry I've used the term "French" to denote be-ribboned soldiers with fashionable half-sleeves and smaller hats, although they need not be actually be French."

And here's the best bit :

"More cavalry in buff coats and dragoons in caps next, followed very soon by cavalry in cuirasses, French dragoons and some command packs. Before Christmas I hope I`ll have added some mounted personalities: Louis XIV, William of Orange, The Prince-Bishop of Munster, the Grand Conde, Turenne and the Duke of Monmouth."
