Steamer build thread

Here are my first efforts... casette tapes are just to show what I have planned for the bottom cabins.



So... are the dimensions reasonable? It looks a bit stunted to me (having seen some amazing builds around the place!).

Should I make it longer? Thinner? Let me know, I'd love to have her on the table water soon!

I think it looks a little stunted if you're going for a tramp steamer like the Venture from King Kong, but probably works OK as a playable model (gunboat steaming along river) or starting point objective. I like the steamer size froom this blog (about 24 inches long).

I'm going to be making a river steamer for the humid jungles of the Lost World, or the shallows of the Nile. The flatter, colonial type like this one:



Paddle on the back I think...

I've since added about a quarter length to the back of it, but that's it for me for this weekend

Well, I made a sketch in between seeing customers (I won't tell anyone if you don't) and this is what I have planned:



I am tossing up whether or not have the marquee/tent on the top or room for a gun emplacement... can I put both? An interchangable thingymabob?

I also drew some designs for a boiler:



The intake door is presumed to be poking into the front cabin, where the crew toil away to get the beast moving. Does this make sense?

Some guidance here would be very much appreciated!

Great sketch mate!

Always go for interchangeable I say - love the marquee look , but who wouldn't want a dirty big gun up there?

Maybe have the whole tent affair on a slightly raised platform that can be lifted off and the gun platform put in it's place.

Don't know anything personally about steam boilers but it sounds and looks great to me.

Hey, now that's something I hadn't thought of! Which is a great idea because then I can have some furniture in the marquee to make it a pleasure/exploration cruiser, and the convert it to a gunboat!

Looking at the size of the hull again compared to your sketch - is there going to be enough room?

The marquee looks good, gives the vessel a 'Death on the Nile' feel. Would be great for pulp adventures... I like the idea of having it lift off the deck.

Nice sketch. Agree that if you can make the interchangeable tent/gun work, it will be well worth the effort.  As for size, I'd just make sure you have a base width around the cabins and 2-3 base widths within the cabins (main deck).

Thanks for the input everyone! Yeah the deck length in the photo is a bit deceiving. I have cut a bit of foam to extend the whole thing to about 15"... hope it is enough. I have made sure that there's enough room for a 25mm washer in most places, in others I have some details planned.

I think your ship is a bit short to get all that stuff you're planning to do on board. I would suggest to go for around 30 cm fom bow to stern. Maybe this can be of any help: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=18915.0
