Napoleonic or AIW minis in 54mm
« on: January 19, 2011, 06:35:47 PM »
Hi everyone!

in these days i've finally setted my new painting position, and i want to celebrate that with a new bunch of minis.

something totally different, this time - some 54mm miniatures: two warbands for Song of Drums and Shakos.

i was looking interestely to victrix's plastic sets: really cheap and very detailed.

but maybe i should appreciate also american indipendence war miniatures (still 54mm), or even some english civil war (ok, it is really far from napoleonics, but i should be still interested: there had been always a gap in my miniatures periods: from 1500 to 1900+... )

thanks a lot!

Jack

hi Jack,
have a look at All the Kings Men at www.allthekingsmentoysoldiers.com
they have AWI, Napoleonics and War of 1812 ranges.
They also got a good write up in Battlegames magazine a while ago.

thanks both for your reply!

i was actually lookinf for something cheaper but still high quality. Victrix sets are wonderful (for now there will be only 3 sets, two french and one british), but before going into the peninsular setting i was wondering if maybe there are other plastic manifactures that are on the same level! ^^

 :)

i hate you.

i saw those miniatures and i thought "yes, that is the way, i love them!"...
then i saw the prices.

now my heart is broken. lol

i seriously love them, isn't there any manifacture with continental AWI soldiers at a fair price? :(

If you are willing to drop down to 40mm you can pick from:

Sash and Saber: http://www.sashandsaber.com/catalog40.php4

Front Rank: http://www.frontrank.com/5_lev2_40mm_AWI.asp

And Trident Designs http://www.miniatureservicecenter.com/msc-40mm-trident-home.htm

I have painted literally about a thousand of the Sash and Saber figures and they are very nice. I really like the Front Rank sample I picked up also. I didn't care too much for the few Trident figures I have seen, but I have been told the range has improved since I looked at them.

I'm currently painting up their 1812 Americans.  You certainly get your money's worth in metal.  These things are heavy duty.  Fun to paint too.  They make a nice break from 25-28's.
This is my boomstick!

@doomsdave: i think that the quality is really nice, but there are only big packs with almost 1 identical pose for every miniature! i never paint the same miniature twice! :(
i read that a single miniature is 5$, it sounds reasonable.. i'll think about it! :)

@Aaron:
i'm not really convinced in 40 mm, they are not really bigger than 28-32mm, but still not compatible.
but the front rank AW1 are awesome, i really love them and i'm seriously thinking to give them a try! ^^

thanks both, really nice minis!!!

I appreciate your hesitation. I was a sceptic at first also. To my mind 40mm is the perfect compromise between 28 and 54mm. You can still game with lots of them on the table, but they are just large enough to really bring out all of the details. If you can get your hands on a sample or two give it a try.

maybe you're right.

the shipping from Front Rank isn't so high, so i think i'll make a try, with AIW.

for the naps i think i will stay on 28 or 54mm, because victrix is going to make several sets for 54mm and VERY cheap, and maybe with the best details all around (of course in the budget range: andrea miniatures and simlar are better, but costs 15 instead of 1,5 euros for each miniature!)

thanks for the link, i'll make a try!!

the front rank minis arrived this afternoon.

i like the 28mm , they have nice and expressive faces, even if a bit deformed. and the rest of the sculpt is really high level.

but, god, i DEFINITELY LOVE the  40mm.
the faces and the bodies are perfect, with smooth and clean surfaces, very little moulding lines and wonderful clothes!

i'm still curious about 54mm, they should be even bigger than that, but... 40 mm is my new love! XD

is there any other 40mm manifacturer with the same level of detail (and same prices, i beg) of Front Rank?
