@Thebinmann: many thanks! upgrade soon... :)

@Bezzo: thanks mate! I think I'm doing such a huge project only because I can trust on the precious aid of my old pal VIncenzo. Doing all this would be impossible for me without being two people working :)
I do not think you are not able to do something similar... Essentialy it's just a matter of time, no special skill required: yep, I'm a modeller, but this is my first terrain modelling attempt and my pal is not a modeller at all :) So I think, if we can do this, anybody can do this. By the way I'm happy you are following this thread :) Upgrade soon with the result of our water effect attempts :)

I have to admit huge admiration for the folks on this site who produce ever more fantastic stuff.  My hobby muse tends to flit from project to project.

I love the whole concept of a Mordheim on the water, anyone going to produce a pulp version of Birmingham's canal basin? (Unless Yow'm frum the Black Country, where they say "bison".)

@Joroas: Thank you mate! too kind. But...I'm really missing the pun in the Birmingham canal  ???

@Bezzo: Eh, you are right. :) Anyway it's too early to understand if this will be ever finished: I think we will finished the base in the beginning of 2012, then starting buildings... We are seriously doing this, so I hope...but I can perfectly understand you: I've quitted lots of modelling projects before:)

well Bezzo, I'm still not understanding the joke. I've made some research in the web but I can not find the translation for "whale". If you wanna help me...  ::)

UPGRADE! I'm happy to say: we finished all the walls! Now everything under the game level is sculpted. We are starting to carve the floor... :D
I've used a wonderful fenris base (fenris granite flagstone) as reference for this part of the floor.

We started to fill gapes with a very good filler too...

Is it enough? NO! :) we made some attempts with water effect too...
First we prepare the foresaid canal section. Then we put filler in the bottom and put down there a couple of objects: a big wooden box and a part of a wheel.

then, we painted it and prepared for the water effect.

this is the result of a too dark water effect :(

so we tried to put on a new lighter level (with some yellow more)

not the best possible but it was just an attempt. :)

C&C welcome!
Cheers
Faber

I think it looks great!

Really dirty and not a good idea to fall in.
Perfect for Mordheim.

No fish ?  ;D

Seriously though, I love the way this coming together. How did you seal the sides of the canal piece for pouring the water ?
(A friend experienced with Valejo water effect and apparently most of it found a way past his seal  ::)

I'm veeery happy you like our project guys!

@Mason:
thanks mate! :) Yes, it's not terrible but I think we can do it better. It's not easy, but with more layers we can give a better deepness effect. A matter of colours in the resin pot. We are using a dark green and a ochra yellow. Green is transparent and ochra is opaque. So if we use yellow to create a dirty (and lighter) water we lose transparence and so deepness. Not easy to create the perfect balance in every layer, but we'll do our best :)

@Bezzo:
you are too kind Bezzo. :) A long birth but a great result I hope.

@zizi:
Obviously fish!  ;D I did not want to waste little shark models for just a useless attempt. But, seriously, it will be a pity not to put some hammerhead sharks like lethal shadows in the deepest water... Me and my fellow are agree about. Sharks are for sure. :D
About sealing the sides of the canal...we used adhesive tape! Globally it worked...but it is not a good solution at all. We had a lot of problems with it: a little amount of resin escaped from the tape cage and it was not easy to save the whole piece, the tape let a bad effect on the touched resin so you have to sand it when dryed and so on. For our project we will use properly cutted plexiglass pieces sealed with hot glue...

Really nice water effects.

Is keeping the final shades of colors on the finished piece going to be a problem?

It would worry the hell out of me trying something like this.  :o

thanks Furt  :)
no, it's not going to be a problem, I hope. The main problem will be to pour resin in the whole board without making mistakes... we have to apply the first level (with its colour) in ALL the canals at the same time, then the second level, then the third and so on... it is easy to make mistake when using a big amount of resin...and  when dry resin IS FOREVER. so, any mistake you do is forever too...no way to correct....  o_o

Instead of paints use inks although some washes would work well also. Don't forget that when you paint the bottom and then apply a tinted water effect all the colors will come into play, so I may tint the water less and do more painting on the ground work. Which resin are you using?

Keep this up, I am excited to see how the stone work comes together!

Whale... no spokes... I'm guessing that "wheel" sounds like "whale" when said with a Birmingham accent.

This project is awesome. I love super-ambitious stuff like this. I think the canal water test looks good IMO. I've seen many man-made waterways where the water looked exactly like that.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

@Ninja: maybe you are right man...if we find out some cash to buy resin for one other attempt we'll try for sure. the problem is that resin is tricky so we would like to try and try, but it's very expansive too so we have to go slow... :(
we use Prochima E-30 Water Effect. It's epossidic resin, very very good material but very expansive...only the best for our project! :)
do you know anything better Ninja?

@Connectamabomb: thanks! clear now ;)
I'm happy you like it mate! Hope this ambitious stuff won't explode in our hands! Hope we are not workin for an ambitious fail lol

@Blackwolf1066: thank you wolf! :) now we are sculpting floor but it's a boring and slow job :( It will takes a long time to be finished...

The medium is most likely fine, there have been several comparison articles written on which brands to use. The trick is the layering and color mixes that work best with each brand. Certain paints can have reactions to cause an otherwise clear product to become grossly opaque or prevent it from hardening in a timely manner.

Take a few pieces of plastic with a lip or hollow out some more foam, prep it with paint or other potential scenery elements and try some things out!

I use two part resins as they seem to have less shrink (where the effects coat the side wall or bank and then pull away as they dry leaving a thin layer of residue.) You can get them from a building supplier can be relatively cheap but they require more practice!

I will be happy to share more if you need it, just let me know.
