Mister Rab's chivalry project - updated 27/06/2013
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:06:48 PM »
I painted something! This is the (very very) beginning of my chivalric dungeon crawl project which may be just about ready by the time Christopher (3 1/4) is old enough to join in  ::)

The dragon's head was very kindly supplied by Ramirez NoName, after I picked up a headless one, for the price of a picture once I'd painted it. So, Ramirez, here you go and many thanks again :D

The knight is a black tree design body from their early HYW range with a 5th ed Bretonnian questing knight head.

These are my first miniatures on LAF, so please treat 'em gently  ;)

Lovely, just a shame you couldn't have reversed the heraldric colours on the knight and given him a red dragon's crest in keeping with his foe, kinda like the knight's ancestors and the dragons had been gripped in combat for generations.

Lovely work though on the dragon, so nice to see the LAF effect do its work re: that head.

I know, I know - I'd already nearly finished the knight, though, when I got the dragon and I couldn't bring myself to restart. Takes me faaaaaar too long! The dragon had to be red as well as that is what the figure is called  ;)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm just waiting for the basecoat on a giant I picked up from Phreedh to dry as I post this. The painting bug has struck again...

Lovely dragon - the eyes are great!

The colour blind knight's looking good too - like his crest very much!  ;)

Can't wait to see the giant...  :D

Got the old marauder one myself, lying in bits - but got too much on my plate at the mo.

Hats off to you, Sir - That's a cracking paint job on the dragon and I like the "green head" on the knight.

A "dungeon crawl" - now that takes me right back to my early D&D days at school .... thank goodness I still have my "Blue Book" rules to look at occasionally.

Great start to a project and look forward to seeing the giant.

Excellent! Great painting on the Dragon and I like the conversion on the Knight, too (i've always liked that particular helmet crest as it looks a bit like a puppet). An auspicious debut for your painting here on the LAF!  ;)

Great stuff, mate! Really looking forward to see how you treat those giants!

Will you do a base for the dragon or keep it as is? Looks a bit barren, but I suppose from a gaming POV it's easier to keep it base less. =) Apart from that minor critique it's top notch, very well painted!

Both pieces are VERY WELL DONE, but the Dragon is SPECTACULAR!...I also like the way you did his/her/its eyes.

The paintjob is lovely, treating it gently would be an understatement. I haven't seen a properly painted picture of this dragon before and I must say it's rather lovely! The knight looks very nice too, good job and a great pair together!

Thank you everyone for your kind words - it certainly encourages me to keep painting and sharing the results here on LAF. I must admit I'm rather chuffed with the dragon as you can probably tell from my change of avatar!

Really looking forward to see how you treat those giants!

Hmmm, I'm struggling a little with the large expanses of flesh, but I've had a cunning (maybe, we'll see!) plan to thin some of the mid shade with a bit of sepia wash to try and tie the layers together.

I really wasn't sure myself what to do, but I've pulled a large-ish rectangular base out of the heap, painted it black, and I'll be basing the dragon on it to match the knight's scheme at some point when I haven't the brain for detailed work  ;)

Okay, here are the next two - another knight to be brother in arms to the first, and a giant for them to match their might against:

Photographing them I noticed more than a few blemishes, but I'm going to try and keep up the momentum and press on!

I think the nest ones will be more adversaries for my chivalric duo: I've some Mantic skeletons assembled, but first I think a couple of Rhoninstorm goblins...

Oooh,  :o I really like how that giant turned out! Glad I sold him to you, I had some second thoughts but it would just have been gatering dust here.

New knight ain't half bad either, really like how the yellow and blue work with the plate armour.

Thanks, Phreedh, I'm glad the giant found its way to me  :D

The knight honestly looks less streaky in the lead, but I may touch up the blue on the surcoat and the yellow on the shield to even them out.

Well done. I really love that dragon and the other models look really nice as well! Keep on doing what you've done to these models!
