Scale poll for skirmishing
« on: 05 July 2011, 09:46:37 AM »
Hello chaps, just a quick poll to see what sort of scale is generally most popular? Going to leave out GW for this as we all know that one  :)

Just thinking of doing a range and would like to know scales preferred (no building suggestions though please, got that one sorted ;) )

cheers

James

I voted other - 10mm.

I used to do size 28mm but cost and the space needed for storage (of scenery, more than figures) has converted me to 10mm for every genre.
I don't know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

The first nine votes (I was the 6 mm vote) seemed to reflect the  forum's main size focus (I'd say scale but that would be incorrect,) of 25+ and 15, so no initial surprises.  I voted favorite, not largest component.

That said most of my legacy skirmish figures are 25+mm figures but they all fight over the same terrain...

Gracias,

Glenn

well, for fantasy skirmish i'd go for 15mm: LOTS of cheap minis, and every pack is with 8 figures, half of a warband!

But for the Sci fi the 28mm is much better: you will have much less problems with the line of sights, and the position of the minis are more important in a ranged skirmish game. =)

And you also need less models than a fantasy one, because the number of races is quite reduced.

On the other hand, there are PLENTY of wonderful new miniatures in 15mm (critical mass, khurasan etc), which are a real temptation! =)

For me, I prefer 28mm for any skirmish.  Larger scale battles I use 10mm.

If there were decent 20 mm then I think that'd be the best choice, it has both individuality and detail, cost and scale advantages. But alas 20mm scifi doesn't exist.

Voted 28mm, but really I'm using GZG's 25mm stuff (with a bit of 28mm for vehicles, drones etc.)

I took a brief foray into 15mm, and quickly returned to the proper one.

I was kinda thinking about this earlier, skirmish games and scale ... mostly caused by the use of the same term to mean different things. "A small scale game" could mean skirmish, it could mean model size, or it could mean both.

You can have a 28mm skirmish game with small groups of people fighting but you can also still have a skirmish game at 2mm or even smaller with the same number of models, it is just that those models will probably be representing something far larger than a human.

28mm  I try and keep my terrain and minis as multi use as possible but it does get out of hand quick.  On the other hand 28mm has a lot of character so since I used them for RPGs too it's nice to have a wide selection of nice sculpts.  I'm starting to envy the 15mm guys though.

God's true scale, James. Surely you never thought you'd get any other response here?  ;)  lol

Can we expect some post-apocalyptic Oshiro offerings, some time soon?  :)
