next section built 3/4

The configuration on this section is different - the boxed in area on the right is where the lift to/from the flight deck will go (for launching raptors and recovering both raptors & vipers.  The area on the left will be a workshop area for repairing damaged craft.

Position of the raptor shows where the lift will be on the flight deck.

28mm figure at top of picture for scale purposes.

One more section to build for the starboard flight pod, but I've run out of foamboard, so off to raid the local model shops for more supplies...

This is so typical of an AKULA project. "It's just not big enough, so I'll make it practically four times bigger." You are an inspiration to us all. Not an inspiration my wife approves of mind you, but definitely an inspiration.

Oh, if you're still looking for 1/48th scale old school Cylons, the old Revel model kit was about 1/48th scale. The new kit is supposed to be 1/32nd so that won't help at all. That is, unless you want to up-scale this project. Then you'll be able to get lots of Vipers and Raiders.

Akula, you're mad..but in a good way!  this project is stunning.  Really looking forward to seeing the whole thing, which by my reckoning will end up 25' long the way you keep adding to its size :)
Smile!  It's not that bad!

Matt order foamcore through Amazon mate. Seriously cheaper than artstores.

I know, but I've got a decent model shop locally and I try to support them wherever I can even if it costs a bit more.

me too, but when it's an 50% mark up it's a bit hard to tbh. I went into my local art shop for airbrush hose and quick connector. £27.99 shop tag. Found both online for £15.00 all in and from a shop in Somerset so still local ish... ;)

Cant afford art/hobby store prices personally.
I get one or two 2'x3' boards a week free from work. Each week is a new ad sign so the old gets tossed. Got em trained at work to save it for me if i am not working on Sundays. :-)
And when the lottery hits is when there is a policy change and the wall of foamboard signs get changed out. Might be 12 at a clip.
And the $1 store versions just dont cut it.
Get it where you can find it and afford it to finish the project. Cant wait to see more personally.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Project - reboot - NEW FLIGHT POD

"All of this has happened before, and will happen again...." neatly sums up my Battlestar Galactica project so far.

Five years after I started this project, I am now starting to rebuild my main ship, for what will be its third incarnation.

The first vessel was too small, with the flight pod just representing the "below decks view", and meant the launch tubes were forward facing.  Each section was 60cm long x 30cm wide, with the flight pod being 6' long in total.

The second attempt incorporated sideways facing launch tubes, and had a flight deck running across half of the upper level, but was a bit too boxy for my liking, and didn't have enough of the character of the TV series. Each section was 45cm long x 55cm wide, with the flight pod again being 6' long.

When I moved house earlier this year, I took the difficult decision to skip the entire model so far, but that meant I was able to go back to the drawing board, and have a rethink......

This is the first section - I managed to get this done this afternoon, but I've kept a template, to make future pieces.

As before, I've started again with the flight pod.  Each section will now be only 35cm long, but 55cm wide, meaning I can still have sideways facing launch tubes. The slightly smaller length -  35cm versus 45cm on the MkII - allows each section to fit in the 64 litre storage bins I've got underneath the table, meaning I might also be able to transport it in the future (if it ever gets finished).  I'm undecided on how long the flight pod will be, but the new configuration means I can get more launch tubes in a flight pod of the same size as the MKII pod.

On the left are the launch tubes, with a raised gantry on the right.

Here I've added the portion of the flight deck that sits above the launch tubes - this will be permanently attached, but the right hand side of the flight deck can be added if needed.

This is more the look I was trying to capture, of a busy hanger bay.

Still a lot of work to do, to tidy up, finish the edges, add railings, doors etc, but hopefully you get the general idea.....

That is truely awesome.
Some one needs to make a complete range of 'not BSG' miniatures.

Managed to get the basic shape of a second module built today, on a rare day off from work.

It is a couple of centimetres shorter than the regular units, as I will need to build up the exterior a bit (and still have it fit in a box for storage/transport).

This module will contain some storage and possibly an armoury.
