Updated - New Building for my fallout project - WIP
« on: July 12, 2011, 04:21:13 PM »
I've started a new ruined building for my Fallout project. It was roughed in in about 4 hours over the weekend.

28mm scale. Large ruin with second story, and lift off second floor for access to interior. Access to second story will be to climb on rubble and collapsed floor.

Its made from stuff in my scratchbuilding boxes:
Balsa and Bass wood(random bulk bags from Hobby Lobby)
Single-Ply Carboard (from packing boxes)
Cocktail sticks and shapes
MDF base
Vacu Formed sheet textures(for tile, etc.)
Gatorboard( similar to foam board, but instead of paper sandwiching foam, its a thin hardboard sandwiching foam. ten time stronger than foamboard, but harder to cut.)
Hot Glue
Tacky Glue
Scatter and Rocks and whatever for rubble

Before adding the exterior walls to the base.

All exterior walls secured to base. Front.

All exterior walls secured to base. Rear.

Lift-off second floor removed from building.

Detail, front, with 28mm fig.

Detail, Rear, with 28mm fig.

Should go great with the rest of my stuff.

looks really nice! Now you have to choose a way to make the ruined border realistic, but the structure is really nice!

I did foamcore buildings for a lot, then i passed to forex... similar, but more omogeneous! :)

really interested, looking for progresses! :)

Realism may not be the goal. Illusion, absolutely. As far as the edge of the walls (I assume that's what you are referring to), there are several issues.

1.I can't spray paint normal cheap paint to prime the piece beacuse of the foam core of the gator board. So I have to hand prime it.

2. Depending on the construction type the building is, its destruction will look different. Concrete buildings are easy. Done a ton of those cause you don't have to worry about the wall core. Its solid. Brick and concrete block walls are hard beacuse they are made up of so many small materials. If you do a brick ruin, better make it small, and have lots of piles of individual bricks, cause it just looks wrong if you don't. Then you have a stick construction building like the one I am doing here. Wood or metal wall studs, gypsum board on the outside, insulation and all plumbing and vents in the hollow wall. To do it realistic you would have hundreds of exposed joists and wall studs, insulation wires, pipes, HVAC systems, etc.

So in the end I have to stay focused on the fact that these are for gaming, not as miniature models of a destroyed building, and create the illusion of a destroyed building. I need places for the players to place figures without scratching the paint jobs, and I don't want players impaling themselves on the broken studs sticking out of broken walls. That's also why I don't do reinforcing steel sticking out of the tops of a destroyed concrete wall. Too many ways to stick yourself or your players on little sharp metal.

Thanks for the comment. Update coming.

Here's an update after a good nights work rubbling out the building.

Priming is next. I will hand prime with latex house paint. Then successive dirty washes, and dry brushing, etc. Then some static grass

Want to get it done so it can get on the table.

Great build mate plus interesting looking material... looks like you could really work it, and it'd take detail well. Where's it from, or did I miss that bit?

1.I can't spray paint normal cheap paint to prime the piece beacuse of the foam core of the gator board. So I have to hand prime it.

Or you could just seal the edges with say PVA, and then spray it.

I finished the building with a paint job and washes that took an evening. I am pleased that Building #3 is complete. I love doing the finishing work on these things.

I base painted the walls and rooms first, then rubble. Then highlighted everything twice. I then mixed up a black and a brown wash (craft paints, water, jet dry, little bit of ink). I wash the already highlighted areas, let dry, wash again, let dry, then go back and pick out detail, etc. Paint ground plain, add static grass, then its complete. Hope you enjoy.
