Book Review: Osprey Warrior US Combat Engineer.
« on: 12 September 2011, 07:20:33 PM »
As a first shot at posting here I will put forward a brief review of Gordon Rottman's US Combat Engineer.
This work is in the Osprey Warrior Series.  I found his comments on combat engineer organization and capabilities most helpful.  the breakdown of the engineer squad with all the varied talent it included is an
important addition to a gaming person like me.  I also appreciated the list of Platoon equipment sets for construction, demolition and carpentry that are included in the book.
Our group recently ran a NWE game in the bocage country.  Altho we had 2 US engineer squads, we really did not use them properly.  Rottman's work gives good background on what the engineers could accomplish on the battlefield.
I also found the discussion of using engineers as ad hoc infantry to be good.  As a former mech infantry officer I would do so only in the extreme.  Now I realize why.
I would recommend this book for those who wish add another Combat Bracnh to their gamng experience.
