Looking for Fantasy rules
« on: November 25, 2011, 05:51:12 PM »
I would quite like to have a dabble in some fantasy gaming but don't really want to go for massed combat but something larger than individual adventuring.

Can anyone suggest some rules that need a "Warband" per side? I suppose I am thinking of something like SAGA for fantasy.

Thanks

Try these, simple and elegant rules mechanics, fun and free

just use minions as allies for heroes as well as baddies and you have your warbands

Song of Blades and Heroes... I've gamed ancients, fantasy, and sci-fi for over 20 years and that system is a breath of fresh air.
a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice.

Definitely check out havoc.... http://bombshell-games.com/tag/havoc/

and definitely check out Skulldred also... http://skulldred.blogspot.com/

Both  were brilliant enough to distract me from ever getting round to any other skirmish type game.  :D

I have to underline Thantsants suggestions, imo both are better alternatives to SoBH and I especially like where Skulldred is heading.

Yep, Skulldred & Havoc for me too. They are both awesome games & deserve far more recognition than they get.
Very different to the usual run-of-the-mill stuff out there & well worth trying out.
...and what fresh new hell is this?

I've only got as far as SoBaH and have never played skulldred, but I have enjoyed Dave's thread about its development and the artwork is great. It's also free, isn't it? Maybe I should try it out.

ARES from MJXII games is an excellent rule set.

I play both that and SoB&H, and I think ARES is the better game over all.

Had a look at ARES and I prefered both Havoc, Skulldred and Goal System Fantasy to it. It seemed a little overly complicated when building unts/profiles
