Fantasy Skirmish with ARES ruleset
« on: March 25, 2012, 12:12:10 PM »
Tried a solo game with the ARES skirmish rules from Majestic 12 Games - rather enjoyed it

Here are some pics:

Overhead View of the board (2 feet x 2 feet)

A Gandalf Wannabee watches the action form the rocky outcrop

Aragorn dukes it out with a skeleton armed with a vicious flail

while Theodan parries an axe stroke aimed to give slightly more than a close shave

Reinforcements arrive ....  all together now ..... allwight!

when Aragorn cried for his Mummy this isn't what he expected!

Like the game - variants for WW2, Modern, Star Wars and Big Battles too

I will never have one ruleset as I like trying other things but this rules framework is pretty cool.

Hope you like the pix

No dear, they are not toys, they are models

Nice scenery and figures.

How did Ares work solo?
I don\'t know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

Quite well - I simplified things by dealing a card to each model and then turning them over giving the effective initiative

When I next play with my gaming partner I think I will deal the hand as normal but we will "play" the cards to see who takes action first - should make it more tactical, eg: do I play low for a couple of hands to come back strong later in the turn or get in first to take the game to him.

How did you find the rules? When I read through them, they seemed rather complicated, but that said it was 3/4 years ago.

They are deceptively simple - basically each figure has a Close Combat Dice and a Weapon Dice which is thrown against a Close Combat Dice and Armour Dice.  Layered on that are magic, hold actions and even borrowing actions from the next turn, topped off with weapon qualities and special attributes.

It plays very well, quite quick and looks to be fairly adaptable.

Rider - I have only played 3 solo games (and of course I won) but enjoyed them very much.  When I get the chance to play face to face I am sure the enjoyment will only increase.
