Revolting Romans thread (finally finished!)
« on: 07 May 2012, 03:13:12 PM »
The illustrious Professor has shown his very finely painted Romans, here are some far cruder attempts from my own humble brush.  My defence is that they are only painted to tabletop standard, and will be part of a big unit.

These are Aventines, but the full crowd will include Foundry, Gorgon and others.

These are very cool figures and your painting isn't that bad at all. I like your painting style. Maybe I would leave out the painting of the lips (though maybe a matter of taste), but apart from that they're really nice.

Thanks Prof, painted lips went a bit over the top (looks a bit like smudged lipstick), I might skip them in future.

There aren't a whole lot of unarmoured/civilian Roman minis out there, I was pleased that the Aventines could be adapted.

Your miniatures look good. I know you didn't ask but my lip advice would be to add a touch of purple to your flesh tone and paint the bottom lip only.

That is a good advice. I am only painting lips on the female miniatures and do it exactly that way, the bottom one.

I was trying to only paint the bottom lip!  :-)  Purple sounds interesting...

I was lazy, really should wear my glasses for painting.

I paint the bottom lip a darker flesh tone on men, highlighting with the shade colour for the face (when I remember).  On women, I paint both lips, slightly darker still, highlighting the lower lip with the colour I use as the base coat for men's lower lips.  Unless they are wearing lipstick.  Clear as mud, that.
Back from the dead, almost.

I've added some more material for my units of Roman rioters- market stalls which will become base dressing as fighting spills through the streets of Rome.

Above are a few pics, there are more on t'blog:-

bigredbat, what rues are you using for Rioting? Very close to my heart this subject, been building up a force/mob for some time.

Thanks Prof, I though you might appreciate the pottery, so good, neh?  The sacrifice set is a must have, too, as you say, and I might have to build a temple to put it in front of.

Poitier50 re rules, these are going to be multi-based as wargame units, like my other Romans, on a 6cm frontage.  They will resist the armies of insurgent generals attacking my (as yet, largely projected) Roman city.

However I am half tempted to paint some more minis up for skirmish...  like in "Rome" with Pullo and Vorenus, and the gangs on the Aventine,  so if anyone can suggest any, I might be interested?

Cheers, Simon

You guys are costing me a fortune in books, I have just purchased 3 Horrible Histories from Book Depository!

There was a set of Rioting rules being done up by a guy in the US IIRC but with a new baby, the set is in limbo unfortunately. The game was demo'ed at Adepticon in 2010 and 2011, I think.
