Fantasy warbands for skirmish gaming [Latest: Barbarians, April 12!]

I finally got around to painting up Nethyrmaul the Undying, that huge undead dragon from the Reaper Bones Kickstarter. Maybe he'll hit the battlefield sometime soon!!

He looks amazing, but he must be GIANT compared to the mini's you're already using?

It is indeed huge! I'm guessing 12 inches from base to wingtips. Probably too big for skirmish gaming in all but the most specialized scenarios, but ideal as a centerpiece for a larger game!

We're planning a game of Kings of War in a week or two, so I pulled out all my dwarf miniatures to see if I could piece together a playable army. Here's what I came up with. I think this might equate to about 1250 points for Kings of War ... probably not quite enough to play an average sized game. Still, it's nice to see them all ranked up together. Most of the foot troops are old Ral Partha figures sculpted by Bob Olley, with an assortment of other sculpts thrown in for good measure.

Sweet collection! That's a great army. Can you use mercenaries from different races to fill out your numbers or would it have to be dwarves? Perhaps some down-on-their-luck orcs would take the job?

That is a MOST IMPRESSIVE array of Dwarven goodness! You've assemble & painted a VERY ATTRACTIVE array of the Little Folk. GREAT WORK!

That dwarven army could almost pass for God of Battles, too (and then it could have barbarian (thousand tribes) allies  )

Thanks for the kind words, folks. I did a quick tally and I can muster about 1000 points of dwarves for Kings of War, so perhaps enough to ally with another player. I can easily do 2000+ points of undead, so that will be my go-to army of choice of Kings of War.

When I first decided last year that I wanted to build a dwarf army for Kings of War, Song of Blades & Heroes and similar fantasy rulesets, I didn't drool over photos of cannons, flamethrowers or organ guns. No, my tastes tended toward the more wild and primeval parts of dwarven mythology. I wanted a bear rider.

So last weekend I painted up this chap. He will take to the field later this month as the club tries out "OPEN COMBAT," the new fantasy/medieval skirmish game.
