Van Helsings "Vor - the Maelstrom" Miniatures Thread
« on: July 29, 2013, 06:12:52 PM »
Anyone else on here, ever played "Vor - the Maelstrom"?

It's been one of my favourite Games over the years - and a game I keep returning too.

Before people get super critical, I am aware these aren’t the best of my efforts – but still I do love my Shard Army for VOR the Maelstrom (and still do, I painted these around ten years ago LoL)

It has an interesting little tale. We were well into Vor for a while (actually I never stopped liking it) and I knew my friend John (Mackrory for those on Facebook) wanted to use his Union in the next Game (I had started my Union, but not finished them) rather than his Zykhee – Growlers were out of the question, as Steve was planning to use his. So mine was a toss-up between my Neo-Soviets, my Pharon, or my Shard.

My Neo-Soviets were the ones I had painted the Most for, BUT I had chipped a lot of them in a dreaded “case opening” when getting them out of the car, my Pharon were still in blisters, so it was my Shard that got the attention. I have never been the fastest of Painters, so I wanted a quick way of painting my “Living Crystal” Army – most people would simply highlight up to white edges – which I personally don’t like the look of. So, I just “went for it” – Metallics, Ink Washes, and Gloss Varnish was the ‘answer’ for me – simple, fast, and looks kinda right to my eyes at least.

They’re never going to truly look like Crystal, unless you could get some cast up in clear resin – but I think the bright, shiney colours does the trick (in spite of the slagging my efforts got from one person). Still, they are done (I had to do some repairs before these pictures, I HATE storing miniatures personally) and I love them (and Vor the Maelstrom) still.

Shard Army Group (1000 Points), could go over the 1k if you "load up" on Abilities though.

The Axion and a Prime - the Leaders of the Force.

An Eradicator (Closed and Open) - basically the Shard answer to a Tank. It can be deployed closed - so it floats about on the Battlefield before opening out into a giant, deadly crystal crab thingy

A closer look at the Primary Concussor Units Amp Suit

Secondary Concussor Unit

A Strider, these cute little walkers are more of a pain for opponents than you would think.

A Jagged Unit - with some subtle conversions.

Theres always more to do, more to collect - one of the reasons I love this hobby so much!

Sharp looking Shard  lol

Great to see Vor getting some love.  It's a good game.

We are on a Vor kick with my group again.  In fact have the Space Marines converted as well (Genestealer Cult is next!).  My buddies Union is rather sharp and now he's motivated to order some extra support from Iron Wind Metals.  My Growlers are still the heaviest army I have and my Zyhkee will have their hands full for sure.

Great stuff!!

I never played the game, but have been interested in the miniatures and setting for some time.

I have painted up 10 union troops or such. I think I posted them at LAF at some point. There is also some pictures of them on my blog.

I was still working for GW when I discovered VOR, there was a core group of us that played. All local GW staff too, cheekily undercoating miniatures at Work ;)

Its STILL a great Ruleset, and a fantastic Background.

Great stuff! Shard are my favourite as well. Vor is such a great game, good system and brilliant setting. I am gutted that the 2.0 version didn't get off the ground mainly for new miniatures, when you look at some of the poop that gets kickstarter funding now.

They look truly lovely.

And I too have used metals and glossy varnish for a quick crystal look. When you have to paint a frigging army you just need some way to boost your painting speed.

Yea FFF, It was a shame - needs a big injection of time and enthusiasm to get it started again.

Thanks Mate, thats truly appreciated. Started "pottering" with my Pharon, can't see a "fast" way - my Neo-Sovs are starting at me too . . . .

I think the Vor 2 Kickstarter was launched before the whole Kickstarter trend really got some attention and the goal was probably set too high.

Hopefully there will be a new try at some point or some bigger compan will pick the game up and continue it.

Super nice work on those Shard. VOR was the game that brought me back to TTGs after a long hiatus. Very good memories of Growler brawls.

Awesome work on your shard (eff the guy who gave you the slagging).  lol

Vor is an awesome game.  Vor 2 Kickstarter was ahead of its time.  That and the fact that there were no re-sculpts planned killed it, in my opinion.

Love to see your other models Van Helsing.

My Current plan is to have at least two (small to medium) painted armies for every game I love.

Although Vor, and Starship Troopers will get more attention than that in the long run!

Yea, Vor needs another "kick" in the Ass.

Hi!

Loving the Vor stuff!

There was indeed a kickstarter but the goal was set rather too high and the rewards were a bit nebulous as I remember along with just a couple of new pieces of black and white artwork to showcase.

I do think Vor deserves to be revamped but I think the creator of the game is unwilling to partner with anyone else to get funding or ensure the game is rereleased.

Sadly even the Vor forum has been shut down and his website stagnated too...

When Fasa was still "alive" I Emailed Skuzzy a couple of times, and although he was pleasant and helpful - he struck me as "quirky" I think he wanted to "jump right in" and set up Vor as his full time business, which is why the KS Target was so high.

"Nebulous" as you point out, he should have had things such as fund to get the production rights for the Miniatures, new Sculpts, and possibly Terrain as well as the Rulebook. It was a real shame.

Still, I shall keep "flying the flag" in fits and bursts.
