What about a female Apache warrior, apparently they weren't that uncommon. Lozen, Victorio's sister, was about the most famous one I think.

Excellent stuff so far, does your stuff size up well with the old Foundry Apaches and Cavalry?

Ditto, and same question?

I may have missed it in an earlier post but how many cavalry will be in pack?

I'll have to try to get some size comparison shots done; mine will be a bit bigger, though not enough to prevent me from using them together if that was what I was planning to do. Different uniform regs between Custer's lads in the mid 1870s and the troopers trying to run down Geronimo and the like in the 80s, but enough cross-over to make it an option.

Four figures to a pack for this range  :)

Cheers,
Lance

Any more characters likely?
Nathan Brittles, Sgt Tyree or Quincannon perhaps?

Or even Audy Murphy in "40 Guns to Apache Pass" mode?
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

The Yellow Ribon characters are a likely bet Gary  ;)

Thanks for your support gents  :)

Any idea on when the mounted versions will be ready?

Not for certain yet, there'll be more dismounteds first, and more F&IW releases before mounted cavalry and Apaches appear.  Keep watching  :D

Well, the Apache Wars period covers 1849-1886 or so, so there's lots of room. Also, uniforms were very informal on the frontier, since the Army's campaign gear, especially in the 1870s, was not up to the job and was supplemented or replaced entirely with civilian gear. It would, however, be nice to see some of the kit that's appropriate for the US Army of the 1870s and 1880s but not made by Foundry or Artizan, both of whom focus on Custer and the 7th Cavalry.

Your command pack already has a soldier in what could be used for the M1874, M1878, M1881, M1882 & M1883 Issue Shirts. Nobody seems to make the M1872 Pleated Fatigue Blouse, and then there's the whole question of the sun helmets tried in that region. Other headgear that would be nice to see would be straw hats and such.

So, I think you've got a valuable contribution, and I look forward to seeing how the line develops as I build my own Plains Army.

Also, is the Mexican Army on the list?

All nice stuff Rob, I really do like getting input like yours.  :)
Yes, the Apache Wars spanned quite a while on and off, earlier still if you count early conflicts with the Spanish then Mexicans, however, I’m starting out with the first military element of The Western Range, as the title of the thread says, with the end-game: the 1880s campaigns. I may produce figures for earlier campaigns as things go on, but I’m not ready to put down which and when for all the obvious reasons  ;)
The range will eventually cover a great deal of territory.
Between the end of the Civil War and the late 1870s, you’re right, there was a great deal of “war surplus” uniform and kit being used up alongside various trial and short lived issues, producing a hotch-potch look with a heavy mix of civilian clothing to substitute for poor issue items, reaching its most extreme amount of variety by the mid 1870s. The late 70s and early 80s issues were often improvements and better received, signalling a return to a more uniform (though still with a fair degree of latitude) appearance in the field. So far my troopers are wearing the 1883 blue flannel shirt with two pockets (nothing to stop anyone painting some of these as civilian shirts if they prefer), I’ll be doing others probably in earlier issues, especially buffalo soldiers, when they come along. Other variations in kit and clothing will appear.
There will be some figures from south of the border, not sure yet whether regular troops will feature for a while, but the list is extensive
1880 sun helmets, nice thought……

 :D  ;)
Thanks for your interest and input and please keep it coming, I hope that you’ll be happy with a contribution to your field force from Galloping Major when you get some.  8)

Cheers,
Lance
