Sly is my kind of Guy. His miniature persona is UBERCOOL...GREAT painting & color choices. VERY WELL DONE!
The stat cards really raise the pieces to another level. TERRIFIC WORK!

Re: Affun's lead-pile - 30/1-15: Ogre!
« Reply #121 on: 30 January 2015, 04:48:16 PM »
Today I painted this ogre:

Mo'Grosh is as most ogres; big, loud and smelly. He travels the world, raiding and fighting as a mercenary as an when he feels like. Mo'Grosh is a simple sort, really, caring little for morals and politics. His primary driving force is his belly and wallet. Any one willing to provide for both of those will find the ogre a powerful ally in battle.

I've had this guy lying around for quite a bit as well. He was originally destined for a Mordheim Warband, but he never got painted as the campaign sort of fizzled out. I tried to go for a more mted scheme than I usually do, and in the end I think it turned out pretty great.
Another advantage of the MDF base, is that it's available in all sorts of sizes, meaning that this guy has been based on a perfect 30mm base. The regular 40mm round base was way too big, and the 25mm ones where way too small. So yay for that.

I am not entirely sure where he's from, but I am guessing it's one of the old GW Ogres. A lovely sculpt with plenty of character. I'd guess its a Bob Olley or Gary Morley sculpt, though some one out there might be a lot better qualified to make that guess than I am.

Thats all for now. Thanks for reading! I am off to make myself a cup of hot chocolate, and then there's a boring paper that needs writing  :-I

You're right! Found him up on SoL: http://www.sodemons.com/rhogres/rhgolgfags2.htm

What a great sculpt. They don't make 'em like this anymore  :D

Cheers!

Re: Affun's lead-pile - 31/1-15: Lich and Retinue finished
« Reply #124 on: 31 January 2015, 11:44:48 AM »
A muted scream filled the evening air as the shrivelled husk that was once a city guard fell to the ground. Above him loomed a dark figure, its eye-sockets burning like the embers of a dying bonfire.

A shrivelled voice rang out from its lipless mouth. "Minionssss." Around it gathered several skeletal figures; the reanimated remains of long dead warriors.
Akatosh the Lich had gotten what he was after. If it could smile, it no doubt would be doing so, but its dread visage revealed nothing of the thought going through the ancient creatures skull. "Sssoon", it hissed at last, "sSsoon the amulet sshall be mine!"

That's the first warband finished: The dread lich Akatosh and his retinue of reanimated boneheads (and one living one as well. But don't call him that to his face)
The pictures came out a bit more blurry than I'd have liked - The danish winter is awful for photography: Either it is completely dark, or its this overcast smear of semi-lumination. Either way, we all go gaunt as the dead, and pictures turn out horribly if you haven't got access to a proper lightbox.
The lich itself is another great mini from Midlam Miniatures. I've wanted a lich for the longest of times; they make such iconic villains. Finding proper lich miniatures is a bit rare though. Too few manufacturers go for the iconic AD&D look that I like so much, instead wearing more into spiky GW nonsense. Ugh. I was quite happy when I discovered this guy. I greatly enjoy the subdued menace of the miniature - no need for spikes and over-the-top ridiculousness here (Nagash, I am looking at you), just a mean ol' skeleton-bloke in some robes, ready to suck out your life force.

The warband reaches to 250 points with the Fightin' Fungi ruleset. I find smaller warband sizes to be the best for demo-style games of SoBH, especially if more than 2 players are involved. Besides, I really like these small compact retinue-sized gangs. You can put a lot of character into each miniature when theres only 5-7 per side.
Next up will be some adventurers, and possibly then a small group of city guards.

Thanks for reading and commenting y'all!

The Ogre & the Liche turned out WONDERFULLY...the glowing eyes really look SPLENDID. Despite the poor photo conditions, the pics still give a good impression of the FINE brushwork & COOL background scenery. VERY WELL DONE!.

That lich looks great! You have inspired me to dig into my lead pile to see if I have a suitable lich figure lurking in there, waiting to be painted.

This warband is a mix of Fantasy Warriors, Midlam Miniatures and a single oooold GW Wardancer. Great miniatures all, lots of fun to paint. It was a lot of fun to come up with, and paint, a gaudy old-school colourscheme for the wardancer; not every day you get to use violet, even though its such a nice colour to work with.

Got one last warband left to finish, and I will be ready to playtest. Great stuff. Looking forward to getting a game in with these guys on tuesday, since the game I had scheduled for tonight had to be cancelled (boo). There's been whispers of maybe running a short campaign, which I have quite a few ideas for - including a so-far unused Jabberwock miniature, so we'll see what we get up to.

Cheers!

Re: Affun's lead-pile - 2/2-15: Trouble in Oakenshire (3 warbands finished!)
« Reply #129 on: 02 February 2015, 09:01:14 PM »
I managed to finish the last of the warbands for tomorrows game! So here's some background and warband introductions, which I've sent out to the players as well.

***

Strange times are afoot in Oakenshire. Guard patrols have gone missing, and strange weather phenomena have all but ruined the harvest. Strange whispers abound in the shadows, rumours of dire portent spread amongst the inns and shady haunts of the hamlets in the vale.
The wizard residing in the central township of Oakenshire has sensed a great magical disturbance, emmenating from deep within the forests of the vale. It falls to the City guard, brave though overstretched defenders of the dukedom, to uncover the truth of the unrest, and thus a unit has been sent to seek out whatever lies in the dark heart of the forest.

They are not the only ones drawn to the beacon of magical power; both adventurers, sellswords and some much darker forces are converging on the vale, seeking the source of the magical energies for their own reasons; be it petty enrichment or a much more fell cause.

Town Guard

Brave defenders of Oakenshire - Stout men, as well drilled and disciplined as they are armed and armored.

Adventurers

Some prefer much less savory terms for these than 'adventurers' - sellswords, robers, brigands are some of the milder ones. Wether driven by wanderlust or poverty, adventurers are generally a varied and hardy bunch.

The Lich

Who can say what the immortal entity is after? Death travels in the wake of the lich and his retinue, as they move trough the vale.

I've also made statcards for each of the units we'll be using, for quick reference during the game, though I haven't finished colouring all of them yet.
They look something like this:

Really looking forward to getting these guys on to the tabletop.
Hope you enjoyed the post, and thanks for reading if you're with me this far!

Cheers

Really sweet shading on your new warbands! I love the healthy glow of the humans' skin. Nice hair and beards on them as well!
