Your approach to trees remind me of my own exploits with magnetized forrest stands:

Thats pretty neat! I didn't think of using magnets, but to be fair, the tree's seem to stay pretty well in place for regular gaming use anyways.
I realized long ago that trees based seperately are an incredible convenience for most gaming.

The Old Bony Guy looks TERRIFIC. There was/is something about them that is really appealing; your brushwork did a lot to help that along. GREAT WORK!
I can identify with not ordering more of the skeletons. I had been restraining myself for sometime now. Then Captain John decided he'd like to sell off most of the G.W. pieces. SO I got off a couple of orders despite the fact that nothing has actually been put up for sale yet.

If I wasnt totally broke, I'd be ordering some in this very instant. It is propably a healthy thing that I have to wait a bit, though. All of that *ordering miniatures* tends to take away from my painting time. And what good are unpainted beautiful models  :D

***

That said; though I am actually on a mini-vacation, I managed to sneak a "minimal painters survival-kit" with me, and thus got another bony bloke done! (Except the base, that'll have to wait until I get home)

Next up should be the necromancer and some statcards. Also, I am working on something a bit special for the scenario/campaign I am intending to use these in. It will involve barbarians and chaos warriors!

That was more or less the argument I used with my other half   ;D Of course, I ended up lugging a huge amount of *stuff* with me, a lot of which I'll propably end up not using at all. Still -

What a great thread, Affun! Can't believe I've missed it.  o_o Keep on trucking, hope to see much more goodness here.

Damnit, I just got into reading some of your blog - You have some excellent battle reports on there. Quality SoBH AAR's are a thing which the web can only have to few of, so i am quite enjoying reading a couple of yours, even though they are a bit old ;) Also, there's some great painting on there as well.

Today I painted up an Orc, and based the previous skeleton.
Here is the Orc:

Shield detail:

I am not entirely happy with how the colours came out, and the freehand is a little bit rough. Still, it's another lovely model, and will fit right into the warband as a henchman. Ill have to get 1 or 2 more though, to make it a group and to build on the theme.
Speaking of the warband, here's a group shot:

(In the background lurks a necromancer, which is still very w.i.p)

Since I just got Songs of Deeds and Glory, we've been talking about trying out a campaign of sorts. These guys are what will propably end up as my warband; a necromancer and a Chaos Warrior with their evil servants, rampaging and raiding while the Chaos Warrior seeks ultimate glory.

Thanks for reading!

The War Band is LOOKIN' GOOD! The Orc fits in quite nicely; the shield pattern matches the Orc..a neater design would seem odd considering the bearer. Be that as it may, GREAT WORK!

That is true. I am mostly annoyed by the legs being a bit messy on the right part, but as you say; the orc himself propably wouldn't be bothered, as long as the shield stopped arrows the same  :D

While waiting for more orcs, I threw some paint at a Ral Partha Dark Elf:

Sir Raleigh could have sworn that the shadowy corner of the ruin was empty just a moment ago. The elf set upon the knight with a speed and fury that was unmatched by anything Raleigh had ever encountered before.

As I finish these miniatures, I am writing up small statcards for them as well:

The design is still a little bit crude (and done by hand - madness!)
I want to try out a system where you draw cards to determine all sorts of stuff, from what mercenaries are available to hire, to which monsters guard the treasure. Also, I find it neat to have all of the stats (and special rules on the backside) for the character on a single card.
The plan is to have some 10 to 12 special characters like this guy, Prince Akhazan. In this way, the campaign-world will also be populated with various notorious and infamous characters that we can encounter during our games, thus, hopefully, forming some interesting narrative set ups.

As for the miniature; I really like the base mini, but for some reason I it was a real slog to finish. Not excactly sure why, but I think it had something to do with me being unsure about which colours to use, and chainmail always being *@%! to paint - At least when you've just spend the better part of an hour doing everything around it. No messy drybrushing for me  ::) I am way better at doing rusty, sloppy metals, like on the orc (Which is also a lot more fun to paint).

Thanks for reading, and cheers!

The More Evil Than Usual Elf Guy painted up in FINE FASHION. That is a good old mini that benefited from a FINE paint job. VERY WELL DONE!
The Portrait of the Drow is REALLY COOL; it's an immediately recognizable caricature. GREAT STUFF!
Although I'm not much on rules, I found using card for my solo games added a random touch of excitement that eliminated the predictability of play inherent in solo games. A deck of encounters & events would be much more suspenseful than a chart...plus you could do more caricatures.

I definitely plan on doing both - Caricatures and an event deck. I'd like to experiment with unknown or changing objectives/game events curtesy of a card deck.
Can't wait to get started on that - I am just about half-way there with the miniatures. I need to paint at least another 7 blokes; to round out the Evil warband, as well as some adventurers of the 'Goldget Foundation' to blunder about and oppose them/get minced by them.

Some of these guys have been sitting on my painting desk for a truly horrendous amount of time:

The new Old Guys are really cool. That Grenadier Dwarf was a favorite when he was a Lad...so to speak. Have FUN with the painting when the spirit moves you.

I really can't understand why I haven't commented on this thread earlier because this is one of my favorite threads on LAF. I really like you eclectic choice of miniatures, and the painting is great too. Love the skin-tone on that Dark Elf, and I really see what you mean about the finish as it happens to me all the time. Don't be to harsh on your self. Often you need to leave the finished mini for a while before you can come back and appreciate your paint job.

Also your partly responsible for getting me into SoBaH. About stat-cards, i bookmarked this site but haven't really had the time to check it out.

I try and write the kind of log that I would enjoy reading myself. So I am really glad that you like it :) (And I hope you are having fun with SoBH)
Now I have bookmarked that page as well. It might be handy as you say.

He's definitely up there with my favourite dwarf sculpts. A brilliant little lump of lead. Speaking of which:

Kean Orchewer, a dwarf renowned for doing just that. He used to be a Sergeant of the cityguard, but turned to adventuring after he got fed up with the unjust policies of the nobles. Now he wanders the land, helping out the many small villages and hamlets that so often seems to be under siege from evil.

Great fun to paint. I tried a new colour-combination on the face, as I think the more bronzed tone fits the tough dwarf better.

I did also write up a statcard for this guy, but made a mistake with the stats, so I have to redo it. I'll post that up later.

Thanks for reading, y'all!

The skin tones look robust & very natural for a hearty Dwarf Warrior. I like the colors you chose & your brushwork is SPLENDID. VERY WELL DONE!
I initially read the as Kean Orc-chewer known to his friends as Old Green Teeth...reading things before the coffee has kicked in can be fun. I'll keep an eye out for The Card.

I did a mock up for the statcard digitally, though I haven't really got a way of printing it. And that I wastly prefer inking by hand.  ::)
At any rate, I wanted to do a "neat" one for my own amusement. And who knows, maybe someone will find a use for it some day!
I do think I somewhat like how it turned out in the end, so I might do a few more of these. Even though the layout could propably use some work.

The savy among you will notice that I added a dash in the middle of the name, since:

I initially read the as Kean Orc-chewer known to his friends as Old Green Teeth...reading things before the coffee has kicked in can be fun. I'll keep an eye out for The Card.

And while Orc chewer is not a bad surname, I think only Keans closest friends would dare call him by that monicker.

- - -

A sneaky rogue has been spotted in the woods, harassing evil warbands and picking the pockets of people on the roads.

An unsuspecting orc is about to find out what getting stabbed in the back feels like.

What his allegiance, and name, is, is as of yet unknown. One thing is certain though; the number of Orcs found with a knife in their back has drastically risen over the last few days.

- - -

Another nice Ral Partha miniature. The cloak was a bit of a pain to paint, since I chose deep black for it, and some (most) of the highlights there are indeed very sloppy. I am pretty happy with how the front of the miniature turned out however. Glad I got him painted, finally. It's another one of those miniatures which you have sitting around in the painting que for ages, even though you just had to buy it the moment you saw it. I've got quite a few guys like that sitting around, hence the tittle of this blog.
