I'd definitely imagine a bunch of the Hordes minis could be used, or mixed with GW Tyranid bits etc.  If you scale up a tad, you could then build an innumerable number of war machines using cheap Japanese mecha kits and gashapon toys/figures.  Hit up Hobby Link Japan and you could find some great simple kits for real cheap.

Would be a lot of fun to kit bash.  Heck I think you should make a relatively simple "build-a-Jaeger" system, and a random table for crazy beasties.  Could be a lot of fun.

So, I printed out a few cardstock Battletech buildings, which naturally turned out to be huge:

Enter Photoshop and some playing around with textures and some rescaling:

This makes the project approximately 2mm scale, which means that I can buy loads of tanks, planes and ships for next to nothing and have my robots and mosters use them as weapons.

Heck I think you should make a relatively simple "build-a-Jaeger" system, and a random table for crazy beasties.  Could be a lot of fun.

The rules set I'm going to use actually has rules for creating your own jaegers and kaiju, will definitely be fun :D

Looking good, 2 or 3mm scale does seem the right size for these things on the table.

Germy will approve (me too, nice use of the tyranid as a kaiju).

These two Heroclix from the Invincible Iron Man set look good next to the Heroclix Jeagers.
Detroit Steel

Sasha Hammer.

Steel is just a little taller (by his wings) and Sasha is about the same hight.
Looking for a set of rules that adaptable for different genres.

Weird. I've just started on a very similar project in 6mm. I will watch this with keen interest.

Nothing weird about it...giant robots fighting aliens?  It's practically a little-boy birthright!  ;)

Thanks for the comments and a special mention to Puuka for those tips on clix minis. I just ordered me a Sasha Hammer, and I'm considering the Predator X as well!

The project is still steadily progressing. My latest post on the subject: http://dawnofthelead.com/2014/03/23/city-planning/

A picture of the terrain coming together, although still WIP:
