Most used colour of paint
« on: February 28, 2014, 09:32:53 PM »
So, i opened some paint points to add a wee bit of paint to some miniatures (after ofcourse I blew off the thick layer of dust) to find some empty! Now it's been a good while since I've done anything miniatures related so I'd forgotten which paint I used often.

It led me to think that I have a penchant for certain paints. It obviously begs the question, what colours do you guys find yourselves using over and over again? It seems that my favourite colours are (and beware they are all citadel colours):

1. Scorched Brown (I've almost went through two bottles of this stuff, which trust me is alot for me)
2. Chardon Granite- I love this as a base for distressed wood
3. Graveyard earth- mid coat for distressed wood, dirty cloth, soil, whats not to love!
4. Bleached bone- bone, paper, robes, highlights... Need I go on?

So there is my 4 most used paints. What are yours?

Cheers
Andy

I agree with Bleached Bone Andy. Very useful and versatile colour. Except they've changed the range now and the closest match is something called Ushabti Bone, which isn't quite as good   :(

Vallejo red leather and flat earth are probably the two paints I get through the most of though.

Good to hear you're back painting  :)

All mentioned are by Vallejo, consumption in exactly that order:
Black - for everything
Dead White - for highlighting
Parasite Brown - for skin
Beasty Brown - for leather and new rust
Leather Brown - for linen, ropes and white clothing
Charred Brown - for old rust

and other colours in equal portions but only a fraction of the above mentioned

I remember how in a WD years ago GW told that of all their products, the single best selling one was a pot of black paint. Makes sense, especially when there are always people who use it for undercoating and terrain painting too. In any case, everyone needs one.

However, I think black isn't in my top three any more. A few favourites that I have to resupply (unlike many other colours which haven't run out in ~10 years) include:

- VMC Smoke
- VMC Ivory or Offwhite
- some VMC grey - Medium Sea or whatever
- P3 Jack Bone
- Foundry Boneyard set
- W&N Peat Brown and Black ink
- CdA Chocolate Brown
- VMA Burnt Umber (yes, A)
- VMC Cork Brown
- VMC Natural Steel, Oily Steel or Gunmetal Grey
- VMC Lemon Yellow
- Gamecraft Grass Green, maybe Stone Green

...and a lot of Vallejo Matt and Glaze Medium.

So yeah, a lot of "boring" colours that are continuously used for wood, steel, weapons, leather, bases and terrain bits. Not very surprising. As I don't do any uniform armies at the moment, no "flashy" colour is heavily used. In fact, I even try to avoid repeating them too much. And my cultists are so well clad that a single set of flesh tones lasts a decade. lol

I have too many paints that get used far too little to make this an easy question. But yeah, I've been pretty fond of scorched brown too. Usually followed by dark flesh. (which sometimes gets washed over elf flesh and dwarf flesh, too) These days I have, like I say, probably too many dark 'basecoat' browns. I like VMC chocolate brown as a more neutral, less reddish brown. Also stuff like charadon granite and MP umber.
Light skin-base browns. GW foundation tallarn flesh, MP tanned flesh, Anita's coffee. I used to have a bottle of VMC cork brown, but after the dropper clogged and burst in my face, I didn't feel like keeping the remainder...
Dull, slate blue. GW's shadow grey and MP blue grey.
Olive, brownish or yellowish greens. More natural greens. I still have a bit of catachan green squirreled away, but also a bunch from VMC, MP, Humbrol, etc.

Black, definitely. Though not quite so much anymore since I switched to priming with gesso.

Various browns and grays used for basing come next.

Then flesh colors.

Most other colors will spoil in the pot before they get used up, though olive drab is almost there with the other frequent use colors.

Washes and airbrush colors (Vallejo ModelAir) are a different issue. They get used up far more frequently.

Well, black sees regular use (mainly in touching up spray basecoat).

After that I would have to say:
-Vallejo Iraqui Sand (I love this colour, and wouldn't surprised if there was at least a bit of it in every miniature I've painted in the last three years. I use it a lot instead of white when lightening colours for highlights. Perfect basecolour for bones too...)
-Vall. German Grey (A real dark grey, great as a first highlight for black, or shadow colour/basecoat for other greys.)
-Vallejo Flat Aluminium (a really pale grey instead of an actual white, I often use instead of pure white as it's more "to scale", less harsh.)

Interesting thread...

I would say my most used colors are:

VMC Chocolate Brown...its the base for all leather/wood/brass/bronze/brown hair and Gold areas on my models.
Old Citadel Foundation color Dheneb Stone...an excellent color to mix with almost anything for the next highlight layer (BTW if you have a spare pot to sell let me know!)

Cheers,

Blue

Brown. I mix my own, but the burnt-umber shade is the one that runs out the quickest, by far.

Black easily black.

Under coats are black
Samuri armour mostly black
Ashigaru armour and helmets black
Monk robes some are black
Sword handles black
Naginata and spear poles, black brown or red but most often black.

I think the most common sets of paints I use are some of my Foundry paints plus black.

The main colours I seem to use all of the time are flesh, spearshaft and deep brown leather

And if I can get it into the piece I love the buff leather as well

Have say I like me some sandy colours too. :) From the collection, Miniature Paints/Gamecraft Sand and the new GW Zandri Dust are good colours and great intermediates, only problem is they're great intermediates for OOP GW colours: Bleached Bone and Desert Yellow for the former, Kommando Khaki and Graveyard Earth for the latter. (Good thing there's CDA and VGC) I also like CDA's Horse Tone Dun as a warmer shade with good coverage.

Most used by far ...

GW Agrax Earthshade
GW Dawnstone (grey that I base a lot of things before tarting up ... often with agrax!)
GW Astrogranite ... again for basing, a texture paint

Then (square pots, forgotten the brand)

Cantor blue
Fern green

then
GW Ushanti bone (versatile)

Im a rookie painter which might explain the above.

I am still trying to find a red that I love.
