No better place to die (movie)
« on: July 04, 2008, 11:15:03 AM »
I learned that a movie about the fights at La Fière is on the way. No better place to die(*) is directed by Captain Dale Dye. It's a former US Marine and he's a well known military advisor for movies such as Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Band of Brothers and The Great Raid. He recently directed the 2nd unit of Alexander under Oliver Stone, and ke works on the maxi-series The Pacific, the companion piece to HBO's Band of Brothers.

A very interesting video with WW2 footage and veterans

From a french newspaper, I learned that the shooting will take place in Normandy in july and august. Ed Harris should be in the cast.

Given the title, I presume that's based on the out-of-print book by Robert Murphy/?

Just wish that someone would make a film that features some of the action from the British or Canadian aspect of the Normandy fighting, after all they did a hell of a lot of it :)
and against some nasty German opposition

Don't expect much from Dale Dye. He stresses style over substance. While it makes him a poor military adviser, it seems to have helped his Hollywood career out.

This sounds like Saving Private Ryan meets Band of Brothers. I'm sure it's a valid project and the combatants are deserving of recognition but there are many other actions in Normandy (and elsewhere) that deserve the attention of Hollywood, especially the British, French and Canadian contribution to Overlord.

I know it's from 6yrs ago, but this is still crazy talk. We all know that Hollywood is right when it teaches us that the rest of us nations were just stupid goons, who were taught how to fight by the white-toothed silver screen GI's.

Good luck.  I feel the same way when companies and gamers dedicate all of their WW2 talent and interest toward D-Day.  lol  If we judged history by gaming we'd assume that WW2 was essentially won by the 101st airborne.  :P

You mean it wasn't?  ;) :D And they didn't face wall-to-wall Tigers and Nazis with bad accents?  :D ;)

The same can be said about the Napoleonic Wars, which was solely won by the British and Wellington.

Everyone loves the guy that comes in the end and kicks the bully when he's down. ;)

That's why we all love the Organization of American States and what it did to end a war.

Every German was an elite SS stormtrooper and all of the tanks were either a Panther or a Tiger.   lol
