The Daishō Thread - update 05/07/2014
« on: May 18, 2014, 07:51:16 AM »
To save clogging up the board I shall be restricting all my posts on Daishō to this single thread.

It is here I shall update you with new posts on the blog, discuss any topics related to Daishō you might like to raise and answer your questions.

For those of you who are not aware of this new game, Daishō are a set of skirmish rules which are set in a mythical vision of Japan. They are based upon the very successful In Her Majesty's Name series of skirmish rules and are in the process of being written by Charles Murton and myself.

The game's blog is here: http://daishogame.wordpress.com/. This is being updated weekly with notes on our design process and the thinking behind many of the unique elements of this game.

I look forwards to chatting with you :)

The latest Daishō Design Notes is now on the blog:
http://daishogame.wordpress.com/2014/05/23/daisho-design-notes-23052014/

In this entry we discuss how we are introducing a set of rules to cover the gaining and losing of On (honour) during a game and how this may lead to victory or even Seppuku.

We'd be interested in your thoughts on this central theme in the game.

The next design notes article is up on the blog.
http://daishogame.wordpress.com/2014/05/25/daisho-design-notes-25052014/

This explores how using all the new options in the rules allows you to create an interesting and potent Buntai. The first draft of the Sōhei Buntai is used as an example.

This week we are showing you a fantastic figure sculpt done for us by our friend Duncan Louca.

The subject is the legendary half-Oni warrior monk Benkei.

Well the Benkei figure has now been printed and painted, and is now just waiting for its final assembly:

Not really sure if I like the idea of him with horns, all of the statues and such seemed to point to him just being a, well, giant of a man...making him directly inhuman kind of feels like it defeats the purpose of how he died.

Benkei was said, in some versions of his legend, to be half-Oni. In Japanese eyes this made him even more heroic as he had to overcome his demonic nature to become an icon of honour and self-sacrifice.

This is still up for discussion. We are hoping that the exposure this gets Duncan will bring him more work.

So, the latest section of the rules to be fully drafted is the Bestiary. If you want to know more about how we approached this pivotal section and the sort of creatures you can expect to find in it you could read this:

"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

The latest set of design notes is now up on the blog. This time I am discussing how we are going about choosing the Buntai we shall include in the core rules.

Its certainly worth using whats available miniatures wise to base your buntai off too. Especially if there are no plans for an accompanying miniatures range. No point doing a buntai of a certain Yokai if there is not a single decent miniature to represent said Yokai.
