Deutsch-Ostafrika Outpost (Update 07Mar - Finished Boma)
« on: 15 July 2014, 05:59:43 AM »
Hi All,

I am starting to put together a small outpost town for the northern section of the colony. I'm just starting, so most everything is still under construction.  However, I have my first building ready to go:

More photos and info are available on the blog:
http://majorthomasfoolery.blogspot.com/2014/07/east-african-trading-post.html

I'll add the other buildings here as I finish them up.

Thanks for looking!

Chris

Looks great!

And your spelling is right! I had probably written 'Waffen' instead of 'Bewaffnung' but it isn't wrong.

Excellent idea. The only thing I am not sure about is the typeface, it looks too modern to me (which does not mean I am right...). Which one is it? I don't recognize it

Gorgio I learned from his blog. It looks alright to me though.
"Bewaffnung" is a bit odd, but imaginable. Actually it is either the process or the status of armament. Schußwaffen (firearms) would sound more common.
"Lebensmittel" means all sorts of food.
"Vorräte" would be almost the same. If you mean supplies in terms of canned food it would be "Konserven"

oh, I missed the blog, sorry.

I see now what bothered me, it is too losely framed for a sign. Anyway, the font seems right, though I could not find out how old it is.

good job!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions - much appreciated!

As I mentioned on the blog, I am not a native German speaker (I speak tourist grade German) so I used my dictionaries to try to translate the sign.  Stupid me, I forgot there were plenty of native speakers here I could have asked first!  I want the sign to say: provisions (food), supplies (equipment, tools, etc.), and armaments (guns, bullets, knives).  If any of the German speakers here can confirm  what I should use, I would appreciate the help (Vielen Dank!) so I can update the sign.

The sign font is the closet that I could find to this period picture (I'm mostly playing the WWI era), so I think it should be ok.  However, I agree that it looks more modern than I expected.

Argsilverson, a scale is a great idea!  Anyone know where I could find one?

Chris

Harrington Typeface, Art Noveau - would suit the colonial period

I think "Lebensmittel" is already great, you cant find anything better.
As Michi already said "Schußwaffen" (firearms) or "Waffen" (all kind of weapons) should work.
Tools and Equipment could be bought in an oldskool "Eisenwaren-Laden" before there were DIY stores everywhere so I think "Eisenwaren" (hammers, axes, shovels, nails.... all kind of stuff made from 'iron') would probably be good.
