LotHS Royal Navy figs...
« on: August 19, 2008, 04:06:13 PM »
hey there Boyos

I was getting together a band of Royal Navy troopers for LotHS, and I was wondering what everybody else is using for Able Seamen?  I have not seen too many that would work, so I was hoping some of you would send me in the right direction....

Thanks!  \m/

Would be indistinguishable from a seaman on a pirate ship. They didn't have uniforms, so you can use pirate figures.

Of course, the problem with that is that pirate figures are usually cartoony and over the top, and so folks don't want to use them as Jack Tars, but in reality you wouldn't be able to separate them in a line-up.

Foundry have a pack of RN sailors and marines that maybe useful although they are later Napoleonic period.  Newline Designs and Redoubt miniatures also produce RN again from the Napoleonic wars.

Personally those Foundry fellows are too Napoleonic-looking for my tastes to use in a pirate-era game. Would be like using 1915 BEF to fight Waterloo.

But that's just me. If you don't find them irksome then cool.

I would second the Prof they are too late for fighting priates. I would go for the more common place pirates (less fancy gear) ones I have looked at are the European sailors from Old glory or the Brigade sailors which are very nice.

What are you using for your Marines? Or rather, which companies figs? Black Scorpion do some nice able seamen that would fit the bill, but they tend to be rather tall compared to most ranges.

I use Front Rank War of Spanish Succession French, they have Grenadiers withmuskets and even one throwing a grenade. I suppose the British ones in Mirtes could be used as British Marines

British marines around the late 17th and early 18th Centuries wore the lower fusilier/grenadier cap, not the taller mitre caps.  Most British grenadiers in the War of Spanish Succession were also using that lower cloth fusilier/grenadier cap.  The Front Rank and Foundry websites both have good photos of their figures in the two different kinds of hats.  One can get these from other makers such as Dixon and Old Glory.

For the original question on this thread, Old Glory has a pack of 30 non-pirate crew in its pirate line.  Probably just the thing for a small navy or merchant ship, though I haven't seen it up close.
Sailors have more fun!

yea....  I am hesitant on Old Glory figs.  I have a bunch, and some of them are just plain awful.  Granted, I am getting what I paid for, so lots of figs at a low price, then thats ok for larger battles.  But when I can only have a handful of figs, I want them to be great looking...

I am using the Black Scorpions for the marines, and I forgot to look at the Able Seamen packs.  Good idea...

I see that Foundry has a bunch of figs that would work, and they are on sale right now to boot...

Well, if you're using the Black Scorpion Marines, then I whole heartedly reccomend the Able Seamen packs.

No one's mentioned Black Cat Bases yet.
