Battletech aerospace rules ?
« on: 25 September 2014, 11:53:31 AM »
Hi,

Some time ago, I bought Battletech strategic operations book, mostly for battleforce rules.

But now I'm interested by included aerospace rules, my goal is to play small scale fleet combats (a capitol ship + a few frigates and cruisers on each side), and I'm wondering if anyone here has some feedback on them.

thanks

My vague memory of the space movement was akin to Traveller's Mayday and SPI's Delta Vee: hex grid with each ship having a 'current position' marker and an 'inertial endpoint' marker where drift would put your ship. You then modify with thrust, and any arrows on the map indicating a gravity well, and you have your next 'current position'.

I rather like the general idea; others prefer to make changes with every hex.

Sorry, looked at a LONG time ago, and don't remember anything about combat. Have you looked at BGG?

Doug

Edit: May have to take that some back; the chits don't appear matched, though the maps do have have the gravity arrows mentioned.

Aerotech was made for fighter skirmish, LAM-skirmish and some dropships. Not capitalship sizes. I am not sure if there ever was any capital ship rules made. But in Technical Readout 2750 there is stats for them so maybe....

And just as a fun fact. My old set of Battletech rules are actually in an exhibition on a museum as a representation of old ways to play. I guess that is one way to tell that you actually are old. ;)

I'm speaking about aerospace, wich is for space combat between fleet, I believe.

I've got the up to date rules (I own Catalyst Strategic Operations huge book), I'm more looking after players feedbacks (fast or slow playing, is it hard to learn, fun or not, etc...)

thanks

I have to take a deeper look in the book, but I remember there was the usual ships class like frigates, cruisers, battleships, etc... Not only dropships.

I'll keep you informed, I'll also try to find some review and feedback, or maybe batreps.

Thank you, I'll take a look on this game too ! I'm more focused on "flavor" than on rules details, usually.

There were full naval combat rules in the battletech technical readout for dropships and jumpships along with stats for eveything from escape craft to battleships :o

I will post more when I find the book

I just bought some EM4 spaceships (3boxes) and mechs (1box). The goal is to use them together and build 2 fleets of big ships (I know, the em4 are more fighters style, but I'll try to customize them as bigger scale ships).

I believe I'll use two hour wargame Star Navy for this, finally.

Battletech had 2 space games -
The original was 'Aerotech' and handled fighters and the smaller transports, (there was a book called 'Dropships and Jumpships' which supported this).
Then, there was Battlespace, which came out after all the Clan stuff was introduced and included things like combat Dropships and, if I remember correctly (I never owned it), Jumpships too. So this would have had Battleships and the like (the post Clan invasion period really upped the tech and military units).

Same here - basically concentrated on the 'War of 3039' and then stopped. So, Battlespace was something I never looked into. Some of the latter Tech Readouts had Warships in them as well as mecha/vehicles/aerospace stuff.
