Having been experiencing great fun with this for a while, I thought it was time to share it.

The Black Powder Zulu book uses 1-4 men 'units' for the British Defenders at Rorke's Drift. It works.

I like the idea.  I might try out an adaption for French Foriegn Legion.

Very interesting Jazbo, thanks for sharing. I think we've come to similar conclusions (my tribal skirmishes are similar) and using similar adjustments. Though mine are for Sudan.

I had a look at your blog. The cards seem very useful and interesting, however you seem to have the senior subs cards on twice, as when you click on the subs the seniors cards appear instead? Blood on the Nile, the BP Sudan supplement, shouldn't be too far off now, it'll be interesting to see if anything like your tweaks are in there too.
