Yeah. . . a few $$s. . . what started out as a few figures to skirmish with turned into an obsession that has practically eclipsed all my other projects. No regrets, though

Figures and terrain, are lovely to behold.
I do this period in 28's.
To see it done in 54's is a real treat.
I have done a number of battles from this period,
 but never this battle.
I guess I should, lots of ideas to use from your setup.

Wow!  Gorgeous figures.  Bases take time to get right so take the time.  And, while I - absolutely - understand the playability reason for the decision, the terrain worked for me up until I saw the wide shot of the sawed off tops of the trees.  That just 'destroyed' the terrain for me.  Tight in, beautiful.  Wide, eww.  Sorry, but that is how I felt the first time I saw this idea broached and nothing has changed in my opinion.  But, again, I understand the why and maybe necessary for this size figures.  But otherwise, wonderful to behold.  Just wish I hadn't seen the wide shot.

Difficult choice. I like them and I think painting the tops black may work, but still think the way they have been done is the best option.

Hi again. Very gratified to see opinions expressed 

Building terrain for miniature wargames is a design exercise balancing aesthetics against playability. I totally understand the aesthetic reaction to the tops of the "sawed-off" trees. I, too, prefer the tight-in photographs. But playability is just as important, and adding "leafy" tops or making the trees taller make it much more difficult to maneuver the miniature soldier through the miniature forest. If you make the trees too tall you can't reach around or over them to the middle of a table 5 or 6 feet in width. Whatever you do to "top" the "trees" has to be removed during actual game play. In the flesh, the visual effect is much less distracting during play than in passive photographs.

Looks just fantastic! Like the others have said the bases on the figures are the only thing detracting from the set up which should be finished.

I like...I like it BIG time!!!  As mentioed already, great looking terrain and figures.  It's always good to see a new spark in playing This Very Ground, great set of rules BTW.  I know a few folks have given advice about the bases, I agree on some sort of coverage.  The one thing I would like to add is some sort of filler.  Yes, filler to smooth out the base of the figure to the base of the base.  If you just add ground cover, flock and what not, you will still see the break or seem from the base of the figure to the base of the stand...just my two cents. I do this for skirmish or single based figures.

Took awhile but I finally tackled a few bases, prompted by some critique on my original post. Key concern was creating a look that worked on both the long grass and the cork surface representing the "woodland floor." What do you think?
