1:50 scale work with 28mm figures?
« on: 10 April 2015, 11:02:24 PM »
I am toying with buying a Viking model ship which is 1:50 in scale. Anyone know how well it will scale with 28mm figures?

I want enough room for some skirmish action on the deck.

Certainly looks good to me.  28mm is technically 1/56, but the bulk of most figs and their width is often closer to 1/48.  Add the bases to the height, and I think that 1/50 is probably going to look as good or better than 1/56 would, especially if you want room for some skirmishing.

Plus, what's the difference in size between 1/48 and 1/50 ? An inch of overall length? Seems well within limits of size variation between different ships.

I do most of my calculations at 1/50, looks better with based figures and the maths is easier :)
So many projects..... so little time.......

should go perfectly well with the figures.

Most 28mm figures do not conform to an overall scale, the only consistent measurement is the height, and this varies on whether its  this " to the eyes " nonsense, or to the "top of the head". So 28mm could be 30mm, or heroic 32mm, or old school 25mm  o_o

28mm is about 1/56 if using "sole to eye" measurements.  Far from being nonsense, To-the-eye is becoming quite standard and is an excellent way to find the exact comparative heights of minis without having to estimate the heights of hats, headgear and  dramatic hairstyles.

I still find that models from 1/56-1/48 almost always work fine. I even use 1/43, but that's mostly with civilian autos.

I was just going to shamelessly plug my own ship. But it seems gamer Mac has beat me to it. :D

The rewell viking ship is very easy to assemble. But it is a bit tricky to waterline - not much though. I just attacked mine with a dremel and I should probably have done some form of marking beforehand, so it took me more time than it really needed.

I saw someone somewhere who placed the ship in sand and gave it a spray undercoat to make the waterline mark. If I build another one that is what I will do also.

IMO 1/50th works better than 1/56th these days with most ranges.

It is the Revell 1/50 Drakkar. Seems to be the one widely used for SAGA games. I have to buy one myself.

Ah Doctor Zombie I think your painting ideas are more advanced than mine! (Also I dont have a dremel tool).

I have decided to clear out my lead mountain prior to buying the boat ... although my birthday is coming up in June so who knows what might happen with hints in the right ears!
