Thanks for all the kind works folks.  So far this project is achieving exactly what I wanted it to :)

Nice job, but that OSL is just showing off!  ;D

 lol

I have been wary of trying OSL for a few years, but I decided to try and get some sort of level of it working.  I can get it working to this extent with that palette, but its all a WIP, im still experimenting.  I did it as described in this blog post, in case you are interested in giving it a go.

Judge Lagransky is my entry for Judgement Day # four. He was quite straightforward, now that I have settled on the colour scheme.

That gives me two basic Sov judges, so for next week I think I'll add something with a little more firepower. I've also been working on adding some Mega City One specific basing elements, but you'll have to wait a bit to see that.

You can see the elderly Citadel Judge Mortis here with the Mongoose Sovs. While he is indeed smaller than the judges, the scale difference isn't THAT bad. Certainly not for gaming.

Back to Sho3box for next week's installment. Ooh, exciting!

Great stuff Mr S.

I really quite like the the bicycle inner tube look that you are getting on the undersuit, it looks good.

Cheers folks. What do you prefer about Sov 2 Michka?

They have their flaws, these boys, heavy cleanup being one, but hey, Sovs.

Oh it's the pose to be sure. Your painting is fantastic. There's just something off about that first one that says "huh'. Not sure if it's the funny legs or the wonky out-stretched arm. Plus, the second one has a badge.
But like you say, at least we can get Sov Judges, and in different poses.

I have noticed I'm often drawn to models that might not be technical masterpieces, but have a lot of charm, or follow a theme I love, like these boys. For an extreme example, I loved Slaughterloo minis back in the day, and a lot of smaller companies do work like this. I guess it's akin to preferring painting to photographs, even though sometimes you look at a painting and can't decide if it's genius or a pile of s**t.

Like Mr Saturday , the miniatures that I like the most are not always the most perfectly sculpted ones.  That doesnt mean that I dont care about quality either of course, just that its a more blurred line than it might appear.  The Citadel Dredd figures are good examples of this, as even though they are technically very poor in places, they are fun to paint, look quite amusing and have a certain charm even beyond the nostalgic appeal to me.

I feel similarly about painted miniatures: very high technical expertise is a wonder to behold, but it doesnt automatically mean that sort of painting is somehow better than a style with - for example - more visible brushstrokes.

Like all miniature ranges, the Mongoose Dredd range has its ups and downs.  What it comes down to with me is that I am content to use some of the sculpts that I am less keen on because they are the Dredd figures that can be bought easily and be assembled and painted with the minimum of fuss.

It has taken me nearly forty years to get my Dredd project rolling and getting too worked up about some of the less appealing aspects isnt going to get me anywhere at this stage, so rather than talk about I am getting stuck in.  I dont speak for Mr Saturday of course, but broadly speaking we agree on this I think.

but hey, Sovs.

That kind of sums it up for me :)

Sorry if I sounded harsh about the first Sov. I actually have a fondness for the ugly stepchildren of our hobby too. In fact I have a collection that includes many Harlequins Doctor Who and Babylon 5 miniatures that look hideous. I still love painting them and seeing what can be done to make them better. Hell, I have a small but beloved collection of Citadel and Mongoose Dredd stuff as well. And now that I think about it, I have a decent collection of Star Trek miniatures that range from decent sculpts to absolute mockeries of mankind. (and that includes the one I sculpted.)

I think I'm less judgmental of older figures. As I mentioned, some of the Harlequin Babylon 5 figures were just sad, but I still like them. Now the ones from Mongoose bug the hell out of me. Short arms and odd poses for most of the Earth Force box set. I never was able to finish painting those. Although now that I think about it, the entire line of Mongoose miniatures is old enough that I should give it some slack.

Anyway, sorry once again for coming off harsh. I love your painting Mr. Saturday, and Cheetor as well. This is a fantastic thread that I will continue to look forward to every week till you both run out of Dredd minis. May that week never arrive.
