Thanks all for the great comments. Andy, no because I can't fit it on anything. I have now got the material to build a proper base board but I need some decent weather - haven't got the space indoors to make it.

Do you have ideas what your going for? What size is it going to be? Is it just going to be flat or are you building in hills/valleys/rivers/etc in to it?

A question on your technique.  So you lay down some salt on top of the hair spray and let dry.  I assume you then brush on your colors.  Do you have trouble with the the paint and brush knocking of the salt?

Just curious?

Hi all,

Thank you for the great comments - really encourages me to keep the rusty madness going.

Andy I do have plan, albeit a sketchy one. I want a portion of scrap wall made up of old aircraft bits, a bit like the old Megaton in Fallout 3. Behind it a flat area for the Junk Yard, with my various recycling machines and junk piles, and then Junk Town itself on a hill, probably slightly amphitheatre style so it builds up around a central 'low bit'. My inspiration is in here a little but, but with much more junk on the hill itself.

Mac

It's not big, or clever, but let's do it anyway

Hi Joey - in a word ‘yes’. Some falls off or moves around a bit but never enough to stop the effect working. And it takes more than one or two brush stokes to wipe off the hairspray itself so that will still lift the paint even if the salt has dropped off.

Really cool image.  Where is it from?  I can't wait to see all your creations come together and realize that image in three dimensions!  :o 8) :-*

A few small bits to keep me ticking over.

For those who were wondering how all this stuff gets stacked so neatly in Junk Town...

I'm going to add a proper chain and grapply bit in due course, once I have done the base paint job.

Also made another pile of scavenged material - the life blood of Junk Town
