Morrays - Warbands for Frostgrave
« on: 05 September 2015, 12:34:28 PM »
Hello everyone,

Thought I'd start this thread to map my progress on two Warbands and wandering monsters.

I've also kindly been given a complete load of old ruins style scenery which is amazing, so I'll be uploading pics of that later.

The main plan is to get the two sets done including the wandering monsters, then I'll get onto doing a  fixed style board that I can jazz up and make different with scatter terrain and ruins.

Pretty excited about this project, looks like a great setting.

I'm after a decent looking Vampire, obviously this guy is a complete bad-ass, but I don't think the dimensions (Hero-scale) necessarily fit in with the rest of the models.

Anyone know a better true scale version that will fit in?

HeHe,

The scale debate I love the unwinnable scale debate sooooo subjective but I digress I think a picture speaks louder than words.

Left to Right

Games Workshop: Necromancer '28mm Heroic'
Corvus Belli: Saladin, Liason Officee 'true scale 28mm'
Northstar: Frostgrave Soldiers '28mm Heroic'
Games Workshop: Winged Vampire Lord '28mm Heroic'
Northstar: Frostgrave Soldiers '28mm Heroic'

As to other options and this is barely scratching the surface.

Apologies for not having any of the Northstar/Frostgrave metals to compare them too but I'm not a huge fance on the metals range. Corvus Belli has ruined me for older style green sculpts. Main point though there is no really discernable scale difference between your Northstar: Frostgrave Soldiers miniatures and any of the Games Workshop Warhammer Fantasy Battles ranges really. I would hazard a guess that their new Age of Sigmar sculpts would look very very odd next to them though as their is a discernable size difference there.

Northstar is much much closer to 28mm heroic than 28mm standard sized heads and arm/legs or you could put it they sit kind of in between heroic and true scale regardless of point of view if you're looking for a characterful Vampire/Vampire Lord and you like that model then use it. I certainly intend on using him as a random encounter monster OR with my Necromancer warband as a Knight or some such.

As to other options and this is barely scratching the surface.

Madpuppet Miniatures: Vampiress
Heresy Miniatures: Vampire in Manbat Form
Heresy Miniatures: Posing Vampire
Avatars of War: Vampire Countess
Mantic/Kings of War: Vampiress Lady Ilona
Gaspez Arts: Alexius
Gaspez Arts: Marcus the Vampire
Redbox Games: The Lady Nyvenne
Cadwallon Miniatures: Vampire Lord Vlad
Reaper Miniatures TOO MANY TO LIST!

I personally dislike Reaper I hear too many bad things about scale continuity throughout their range/s the material and replacement of poor castings to want to use their products but take that with a grain of salt and don't let that stop you grabbing something that tickles your fancy.

Haven't listed the other Games Workshop options either including the OOP range.

One thing does come to mind though as a really interest possible candidate the Ur-Ghul.

What I do: Chef by trade, ass by choice; but I play the following when I'm not being either.
Infinity: Haqqislam is my main and then I own ALL THE THINGS!
Frostgrave: Nec

Good start to your warbands.are you using different paint schemes on each warband or leaving them with a more mismatched hireling type look? Themed coloured warbands can look cool when pitted against each other, but so can mismatched thuggish looking mercenaries - who also have the option to fit into either warband to replace those lost in battle during campaign.thanks for sharing

Wow thanks guys, vis especially that's an amazing response! I've got the reaper worm and I was shocked to find they manufacture their products in China as the website says it's made in Texas so that was quite disappointing id rather support local.

Your scale shot is impressive, I know what you mean about CB doing amazing metals atman le mute is my fave model of all time!

Might just grab the winged chap then, great model.

Not a problem glad it helped with your decision ohh.

P.S. I have Le Muet won him recently for coming first in local Infinity Comp; really looking forward to his general release later next year as well as I think he will come with a sniper rifle breaker pistol he has now.

Yea I shamelessly bought the full ITS pack just for the mini, despite him not having a visable sniper rifle! Buuuut the pack does come with a weapon sprue so I can always convert.

Anyway, back on topic...

Sprayed all my guys white, figuring go white because of all the snow I guess :)
And this is only 1/3rd of the contribution of scenery that my mates given me, freeking amazing!

My mates also sorted out my vampire problem, slotta says GW but I can't place it?

It's one of the ones they made for Mordheim when that first came out.
Back from the dead, almost.

I think that one had a sword and the other one in the vampire box, with his cloak wrapped round him, had a polearm of some sort.  As I recall, I made my version of the mini above unarmed, and sculpted a shirt, tie and waistcoat to replace the armour.

Edit: I'm wrong, it seems.  Below is the cover photo from the Mordheim undead box, with only the cloak-wrapped vampire shown.

I guess the one that Morray has must have been sold separately.  You can see Steve Dean's version of it here:

It was a Blister pack released alongside Mordheim or around the time it was in open distribution.

Blister Name: Vampire with Cloak Spread

Ah yes that's the one!

I think mine will probably be a lot darker...And maybe a little more angry considering his hands have been chopped off! :/

Ice Worm

Cyclops! (My fave model yet)

Bear...Grrr

Temporary undead contingent, I'll deff get the set once this is all painted.

And a big arse scary Giant.

I'm now after an Ogre if anyone has one of those old ones going for sale, if not no worries.

(Obviously I'll have to do a big of play testing to get monsters that don't have stats right, can't remember seeing a Giant or Cyclops...Guess Cyclops will just be a troll, and Giant...Well anything he catches gets smushed! ;))
