Black Hat Chinese Fantasy **Absolutely final update - honest!**
« on: 28 November 2008, 05:30:03 PM »
I'm not sure if this should go here or in the dedicated fantasy section, so if anyone wants to move it, go ahead.

Anyway, I thought folks might be strange enough to want to see what I did with my last order from Black Hat, the Monkey Magic set from the Tales of the Dragon Kings range:

Sorry for the dodgy quality of the pictures.

These were great fun to paint. They look nothing like the TV series characters, but I tried to at least copy the colour schemes where I could, and tie them all together by using the yellow scarves etc.

I think my favourite one is Pigsy, he just looks so happy.  lol

Over to you for the C&C. Cheers for looking!

Thanks very much everyone!  :)

I must abdmit, I wish they bore a little more resemblance to the TV icons of my childhood, but they are still lovely little figs, and the hole range has a great sense of fun.

I've got the alternate Monkey and the Vampire Hunters to do next. I'll post the pics as and when.

If you pardon my saying so, you guys seem very hung up on this one portrayal of Journey to the West. There are hundreds of other ones.

Sorry if I'm sounding critical, I don't mean to :P

Lovely paintjobs, they look great!

I have a small pile of these to turn into a project next year as well  ::)

I realise that, but if you grew up in England in the 70's and 80's, then the TV series of Monkey (and The Water Margin) was pretty much all we had to go on, and they have become cemented in our unconscious minds as the "proper" way things should look. Silly, perhaps, but true.

And at least you took the time to comment, thank you.  :)

Point taken. I guess it just bugs me the same way it bugs me to know that future generations will grow up thinking (however unconsciously) that Frodo is Elijah Wood and Arwen is the daughter of the bloke from Aerosmith :?

I forgot to say that the paintjobs are great, whichever way.

Aahh, friday night early evening BBC2 TV at its best, happy memories.

Greta work Bob, lovely stuff.  :)

Latest addition to the project, and very much inspired to get my finger out and finish it by Svennn's version elsewhere on the board. Hope you like it:

I went for a darker cloud, as I seem to remember it being quite stormy but shot through with pink lights in the TV series. I'm not sure it's worked, but I can't be bothered to do anything else with it now.  lol

Very cool, all five of them.
The cloud looks about right to me, with the pinkish hue to it.

Cheers mate!  :)

Here's a couple more that I finished today as well. A Temple Guardian, obviously *ahem* inspired by your display one, and a hungry ghost.
