Hog Thief Bend
« on: 09 April 2016, 10:48:30 AM »
OK, so this is all your fault. I’ve been sneaking over to the Old West board from my usual home on the Pulp board for some time now. I’ve so enjoyed your Old West towns that you’ve forced me into making one myself!

This shows the origins of Hog Thief Bend. The brothers Jeremiah and Obediah McGrog have been prospecting for gold in the hills above the Wette River valley. They have recently struck lucky and Jeremiah is dancing a jig for joy in his long-johns (he hasn’t noticed that Muffin the Mule doesn’t seem to like his dancing and is about to take executive action). Obediah seems so overcome by events that he appears to have stripped off and is dancing in the buff! Snappy, the terrier looks on in disgust. Hearing of this strike, the land agents have already moved in and are busy surveying the area for the township which will inevitably grow as news of the gold strike leaks out. Mountain man Pierre ‘LeGros’ Coqsure is concerned that this invasion of greenhorns will interfere with his trade in beaver.

The brothers were clean-shaven when they started prospecting at Hog Thief Bend!

A nice start, sir.
Plenty of character in that merry little bunch.

So....when can we expect an update?

Mason, I have to say that Upsheet Creek was the inspiration that made me start this project, so you will have to take some of the blame!  ;)  Seriously, your town is superb and I am going to have to steal emulate all some of your ideas!

I have painted some more inhabitants but my first proper town building is currently in the post to me. I am still debating how to construct my board/s for this as I want a town board and possibly a board featuring mine buildings. I will post a few photos of the figures I've painted so far shortly..............

Some of the locals admiring the first public building erected in Hog Thief Bend......................

L-R: Kapitan Aard B'Stard (late of Vesterbro, Copenhagen), now a Steamboat Captain on the Wette River, William Gull, Barber-Surgeon (Bill to his friends, late of Whitechapel, London) and Major Jubal 'One-Arm' Tardy (late for everything).

Its rite fitting that the first building is a public privie  lol I cannot wait to see how this develops. I love the story aspect of your tread as it gives context to your build. With 9 buildings planed are you working on a small 3 or 4 foot table size or a larger one with lots of scenic elements?

Dancing nude or in long Johns can be no good. You´re not doing well my good ole Lord S. This is going to be very naughty - Hog Thief Bend will be a most disrespectful hive of scum and villainy when it´s being founded that way. I suppose it will be rather sooner than later that either the marshals are going to have a sharp eye on that or (even more probably) some (of my) scoundrel gunslingers will steal the mad brothers´ excavated and sieved treasures...  :D

Who makes the figure with the apron? Great painting and scenery by the way.

Thank for your comments, guys.

warlord frod, I think I may have 2 to 4 boards, maybe 2' by 4'. One will be a scratch built mine area (The McGrog Mine). One will definitely have main street buildings. I am not sure about the rest yet, I would like a river dock for a paddle-steamer though (dreaming again)!

You're darned tooting Michi! Wait until you see the soiled doves! Watch out for the mad McGrog brothers though, they can be a mite ornery when gunslingers are about (though where Obediah keeps his six-shooter is anyone's guess).

Thanks 3 fingers. The figure with the apron is from a set of Jack the Ripper figures from Foundry but I can't see it on their site now. Maybe that set is OOP? I found this picture of the set on the Miniaturicum website but not on Foundry.

Very true, my friend, very true. With that much gold about all sorts of scum will be attracted to Hog Thief Bend! It will need a Marshal of the highest calibre to keep the peace.

Welcome to town Lord S.Case.

I really enjoy the narratives you provide with your updates, so I shall be watching all further proclamations closely.

IMHO pulp and OW go hand in hand. The frontier town doesn't need to be set America.. any colonial expansion can work as a setting. It will make a nice FlyInFlyOut setting for your pulp adventurers too. Better set aside a paddock for the planes ;) :D

Cheers
Matt
