Plasticville?
« on: April 30, 2016, 03:22:26 PM »
Can anyone of you tell me how well the Scale 0 houses from Plasticville work with 28mm miniatures? I'm looking for some modern buildings to tinker with.

Cheers
Martin

In my (admittedly fairly limited) experience,  they are absolutely spot on.

Check out my Flickr site on the left to see actual pictures.
O scale Plasticville is perfect for 28mm miniatures.  Occasionally it looks a little small but,I think it's perfect.  What genre do you game in?  I can give you some good ideas.

They look great.  They don't look particularly modern in their stock form, as they're pretty strongly rooted in 1950's America, but they have alot of uses since so many similar buildings still survive today.  I've got a couple waiting for the greebling that will take them into near-future settings.

Not to be "that guy" but if you Google Image Search "plasticville 28mm" you'll see an incredible bounty of pics showing their uses.

The plasticville was designed for 027 which is supposed to be approximately 1:64 the scale. True O Scale is 1:48th scale and our 28mm models work out to 1:56 scale. They are all close enough to mix and match for the most part. Scale seems to drift from manufacture to manufacture. Kind of like we see out 28mm models all being a little different in height, head size etc. I use 0 Scale detail parts all the time for my terrain.

O27 isn't a consistent scale Often times it's almost as high as a properly scaled 1/48 o scale model, but they're always alot shorter so as to go around 27" curves.

I've heard the 1/64 scale mention before, but 027 trains and buildings almost always look monstrous next to 1/64 scale figures and vehicles.

It's relatively the same for plasticville. The doors, windows, hight, etc of the building are all good for 1/48 or so, but the overall footprint is usually shrunken quite a bit to save space on the layout.

Yeah, there are a few issues, especially if you want to use the interiors, but most of the time you can easily deepen them with just a bit of work.

I bought a bunch for a Fallout Project, but the 50's vibe is perfect for that. Scale wise as many others have said, they are generally a great match. 2 outliers I have are the 5 and dime? I'll have to double check but it is one of the "strip mall" type buildings, maybe it's the post office; regardless, that one runs a bit big but not unusable. The one I'd stay away from (I'm using it for 20mm to deal with this) is the church. Wayyy too small.

And that's what I really like about them. You can get a funky retro look going with lots of sturdy, lightweight models on a smaller table.

Our group has been painting them up for a Post-Apoc setting, but if you check out Gary42's link you'll see how the Plasticville kits can fit other settings very well indeed.

Agreed about size. Very few wargaming projects work well with a true-to-scale footprint for buildings and other scenery.  Compression of footprint is ideal.  I've built some reasonably huge pieces of urban terrain and yet they're all drastically smaller than an accurately scaled version would be.

When I converted a toy elevated train station it was really quite big, but I realized that if I wanted to build the platform it truly-to-scale, it'd stretch clear across the gaming table.

Not to add in to the post apoc horn tooting, but I use them consistently for my Fallout projects as well.
