I suspect it is a variant of tamiya/ink on metal to easen the job for you?
Why the square bases?!
Using inks is definitely a time saver and it gives some interesting effects, The Tamiya clear red for the metallics is a bit of a signature for this army as is a thin blue wash over any bright silver to make it pop. I can't recommend Army Painter inks highly enough for their results and now use them on all my models.
I use the square bases because I really like the resin ones from "Foundations of War" and they look nice ranked up ( IMO ). From the start I wanted to use movement trays and I think the "Warbases" Regiment trays are cool because you can rank them up but the spaces give enough room to stop them being too crowded.
