Awesome work.

I'll repeat my comment about this thread needing to become a "how to sculpt" sticky after the contest is over.

Thanks for all the comments folks  :D

I should complete stage 1 today, having now added the basics of teeth, tongue, neck frill, etc. I'm just putting together the wire frames for the feet (yep, more soldering) then I'll post up the end of stage 1 photos.  ;)
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2025 = 74
(2024 = 38; 2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

Cracking work mate  8)

Cheers James : though it's a bit tight on the 5cm dia base rule  ;)

So I soldered on the feet, a really awkward step that wouldn't have been necessary if I'd made the wires long enough in the first place.

I've also added the basics of teeth, neck fins and tongue using 0.25mm plasticard fixed with superglue. A raised marker for the limbs was also added to the uppermost surface of the wings, using linen saddlery cord superglued into place. With those additions stage 1 is complete. Stage 2 will pretty much entail covering everything in a GS skin, which will be a much slower process with fewer updates (they'd all be a bit samey what with them being endless repetitions of the same technique).

So here we are:

For those interested in such things, it presently weighs in at 73g (coincidentally the same as the base!) and measures 31cm wide, 26cm long and 8cm tall (without the flight stand) as presently displayed.

Thanks to all those who have followed so far and I am especially grateful for all the comments.

Steve.

Thanks Za  :)

One other thing folks, I can't be 100% sure yet as the 'handle' is in the way but the model should be able to stand on the ground on claws and tail. I might need to lengthen the tail a little to add a tad more weight at the back but if so that shouldn't be a problem to do.

That third photo down made me think you had put a frill underneath the neck. Nice progress by the way.

Thanks folks  :D

I quite like the idea of a neck frill but the dragons in GOT don't have them......

Anyways, having thought I'd done with stage one I found myself alone with spare time and a wandering mind..... so I thought I'd make some changes:

1. I cut away Milliput at the knees and reinforced the wire bend with solder

2. I did something similar with the tail and lengthened it (ignore the angle of flight as the weight has changed so the cantilever needs adjusting):

3. All of which was to enable freestanding as an option to flying:

Now I need to tidy up Milliput again  :)

Still a long way to go though  ;)

What about using GS for the teeth? Or even melt plastic spruce stretched and trimmed? I'm not sure the plastic card stands up to the rest of your amazing work buddy. Or are you planning on covering the plastic card with GS anyway?

Thanks very much Andy and yes, the teeth will be covered with GS. They'll actually look more like needles so the card is simply to provide something to push against. It's serrated because the teeth don't have a common 'level'. This is a good shot of its atrocious dentistry and also shows how much the head needs to change in the GS stage (eek!):

One thing that stands out to me is that I need to add a bit more plasticard 'height' to the bottom teeth and some more length to the tongue.

Re: [BSC17] SI's Flying Dragon; UD 14/1 - final form pre GS work

So I tidied it up, and it's now in the final form ready for GS work.

Edit: Forgot to say, it's now at 83g (I had to add 10g of length to the tail to overcome tipping)

This was my last chance to check it looked 'right' as any changes affect the ability to balance on its feet.  I also discovered that shaping a straight tail is a lot easier than a whipping tail.

Here it is on some WIP terrain with some Boltons (neither will form part of the comp entry) to show how the size and proportions will work in game; all the shots are standing as I need to remake the flying base (but the last shot shows the hole for the cantilever arm):
