Modeling Booms/Masts/Spars on a tramp steamer
« on: 16 July 2011, 06:01:51 PM »
I know there's always a lot of tramp steamer love in this forum, and was wondering if anyone might be able to help me with something.  I never have trouble finding good modeling books for, say, Napoleonic Man-of-Wars, but I can't find any diagrams on how pre-WWI Cargo Booms work.  This would help me a LOT in designing.

I saw this book listed on Amazon:

(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1557509093/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0V3Z2QP431KQG93FAHNZ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846)

but it has a decidedly modern ship on the cover.  Does anyone have this one?  Do any books carry what I'm looking for, or does anyone have a PDF?

I'm also looking for details on boat davits, too...

Thanks!

TrampSteamer2.pdf has a whole pile of great information on interwar tramp steamers, including some diagrams that show the cranes/derricks/spars/etc. Some further links and a bibliography as well.

Google Image Search can also be useful.

One thing I've seen done, and intend to do myself one of these years, is use old paintbrush handles for the spars and booms - that gives a nice tapered shape very easily, and paintbrush handles are usually hardwood of some sort that takes drilling and such easily.

The Sydney Heritage fleet is restoring the John Oxley, a coastal steamer that operated throughout the period.
It's not exactly what you might be thinking of but if you explore the link you'll find lots of plans that would prove useful. Masts fore and aft on any of these ships would be similar.

I'm making a transportable model of it in 1:50 at the moment and it's a hoot. You can buy the plans or download most of them. Pretty little vessel.
