Looking for a UK-based website host for my hobby site
« on: January 04, 2024, 01:01:17 PM »
I have a personal website that I use to support my RPG and wargaming hobby.  In the beginning ISPs provided webspace.  When they stopped doing that I went with Falcoda, which is a UK company.  They've started experiencing more and more frequent problems: both for hosting my little site and for hosting mailboxes.  Does anyone have experience with a UK-based alternative?  I don't need a internet commerce support or anything like that; just a place for people (mostly my friends) to access my site.  Thanks

When I first hosted my WordPress blog I went with TSO Hosting but over the years they just seemed to get worse. Performance and support went downhill. About 4 years ago I move to Strategem Hosting. https://www.stratagem.host/

Haven't looked back. I currently have 3 websites, 5 blogs and a forum hosted with them. Performance on my blog is hugely improved and I've never had an issue with support.

Thanks - I'll look into them.  Three friends are in the same position as me - fed up of Falcoda - and they're retired IT professionals so I'll suggest this to them and get their take.

Yes. Forgot to mention that. They migrated all my blogs and migrated and upgraded the forum as well. And the SSL is good to have with most browsers throwing a wobbly if a site doesn't have one.

I've done more recent upgrades myself but they've always been on hand for advice if needed.

Thanks for the further information.  One of my friends has gone ahead with Mythic Beasts and is happy.  The other two are not yet decided but are looking at MB or Freethought Internet.

Mythic Beasts are trusted by the Raspberry Pi folk for hosting and handle the Pi OS repository servers so that should be taken into account.

I've been using https://hostinguk.net/ for five+ years and been happy with the service. Tech support has solved my issues every time I've needed them so no complaints there.

I found this old thread as I'm looking to move my site due to big increase in hosting costs from iPage.

I tried Stategem with no response and discovered they are now closed - though their website doesn't say that.

I've contacted Mythic Beasts.

Any other recommendations?

I come across Krystal in my day job and while I don't rate them at all for the specialised hosting that we require and would not recommend them for that, their support is responsive and they've been around long enough that I'd certainly consider them for basic web hosting: https://krystal.io/hosting

I use gandi for domains, haven't used their hosting but they have a good company rep and again have been around for a long time:

Edit: I should note Gandi are actually French, but that shouldn't matter in the slightest for blog-style websites on modern internet connections.

OVH are another that's been around a looooooong time, also French: https://www.ovhcloud.com/en-gb/web-hosting/compare/
