Love this. I have my own pet project still on the back burner for doing 1:72 plastic US Cavalry, but I fear I'm going to have to do a lot of time-consuming conversions, because I wanted more standing or trotting poses, like on patrol. I've got two boxes of these Waterloo dudes sat there, because they're closest to what I want equipment-wise.

Love those 1:72 models!!! And the terrain too!

I'm having to do a few conversions on the mounted variants of my 54mm models, notably on the several bugler-standard bearer models that I got in large quantities - more than I need. Luckily I also got loads of prone models, so there are conversion possibilities there! It's actually great fun...  :D

Conversions is not to hard.
I made all my western/indians stuff in 1/72 and some conversions when I don't find what I'm looking for like:
Apache scout

apache warrior( made from plains indian)

Gan dancer

A dog soldier

I was planning to make some buffalos with Imex cows( the one in the middle) but I found somes in white métal. ( the small buffalo is from Atlantic but rather too small)

Here somme conversions on the Italeri indians

And here my seminoles with  the same Italeri indians from Est

Love the Airfix figures, your paint job has really given them life. Kind og inspiring actually as I was eyeing off some Airfix 1/32 figures the other day.

Brilliant thread with fantastic pictures!

Me, too, was hooked by John Ford's Cavalry Westerns when I was a child. Got them a few years ago on DVD and still like them.

The painting is ace, btw! Maybe one day I'll try to make a John Ford Diorama, but to capture the vastness of the land I feel as a g a m e. It should be played in 15mm or 20mm.

Does someone know of good character packs in those scales?

Yeah, I agree, really. I was gonna do 15/18mm originally, as a couple of years ago there was talk of a new John Ford range coming out from the guy who runs the Legends in Time site in the US - he sent me some preview pics which were amazing. However, there have been endless delays and in the end I decided to go the other way and do 54mm just cos I love the old Airfix models. On a 12 foot long table it'll work well enough using modified The Men Who Would Be Kings rules, as they are suitably 'skirmishy' and the sheer scale of 54mm will make it stand out in a show environment which is partly what the project is designed for. And the idea of doing 'old movie' style games with 'old toy soldiers' seemed kinda fitting too! :D Having said that, if those 18mm figs ever see the light of day I'd still be tempted!!

The Newline range isn't bad at all. A bit limited in poses for the Indians and their horses are a bit dodgy, but in large numbers they'd probably look cool. Blue Moon do a great range of 'historically accurate' 15/18mm... Their Sioux Indians are particularly fabulous...

DivisMal, Peter Pig have all kind of character packs in their Old West range. You might check there!

Mason, thanks for the mention, I'm currently working on the mounted versions - between other stuff :-D

Great!
I will spend my time working on something else and await the official mounted versions.

Newline have a nice range in 20mm

Thank you! Those do look good and seem to be well proportioned plus there is already a gunslinger pack in the same range which has a Clint Eastwood lookalike.
