The second of 'The Races' on the Island of Ascension using 'Maximilian 1934' rules, a sort of mix of 'Pulp Alley' aesthetics and 'Gaslands' racing insanity. Last time, the Socialists won, claiming a moral and propaganda victory over the "elites". Now the authorities had come prepared by quietly funding one of the organised gangs on the island to even things out.



Will "The Syndicate" be able to hamper the Socialists' attempts to use The Races as a tool for propaganda?

Today I played two solo games back to back using the same miniatures and general setup.

First up the Gangs

The Slick Gang led by the sinister Mr. Priestly


The Barrens Gang led by Stone the former leader of the Slicks!


The first game was played using John Lambshead's - One Hour Skirmish Wargames Rules and did indeed take about an hour. The scenario was a simple get to centre of the board and nab the prize kind of thing, just to give the rules a whirl. Basically the Slicks after suffering some early setbacks ended rolling the Barrens lot up,  with an epic duel in hand to hand to combat between Priestly and Stone deciding things on the final turn. Spoiler Priestly decapitated Stone with his katana!

Playing with cards and no dice was different and I think as I become more familiar with the rules, which I must say play much better than they read I think. Was very enjoyable and avoided the I might just reroll that last dice quandary all of us solo players sometimes get .

This game was brutal with nearly everyone wounded or dead after a couple of turns, although I kept things very basic as this was all new to me. May well give this another go at a later date.

Oh dear! This year I've finished a Lion Rampant Seljuk force that went 0-5. They only got their first win when my regular opponent was jetlagged and (we found out afterwards) coming down with a nasty bout of COVID.

I was lucky enough that the last game I played was at Warhammer World last week, fielded the tanks I’ve completed so far for my Armour Regiment, the Parsimonius 11th vs a couple of friends using their Imperial Knights and Votann
