Indian Paras in Burma
« on: 21 December 2017, 03:51:13 AM »
In the last few months I have seen mention of a book on Indian Paras jumping into Burma, can anyone recall the name of the book, please? I think it may have been in the Arakan area but memory is failing me.
Cheers,

From what I recall there was a single Indian Parachute (50th) Brigade as such and fought as infantry close to Kohima/Imphal (at Sangshak pass) and got mauled. The brigade had two battalions, one Indian one Gurkha. The Gurkha were reformed after Sangshak and dropped on Rangoon as the airborne component of Dracula.

Have a look at 'The Longest War' by Allen, it covers both actions.

Hope that this help.

They wore same uniforms as NWE Paras on a drop as far as the pictures I have seen show.
In non drop situations the Gurkha para appear to have the wide brimmed hats

So some Indian heads scattered on some Brit Para figs would suit? Jungle Green trousers rather than Khaki Drill.

Thats what I assumed  too,  then I am sure I found some reference to them using smocks during tje actual jump

After all the primary purpose of the smock is to stop your bits flying around and your battledress ending up over your head.

Will see if I can dig it up IIRC it was one of the docs on paradata.

That's what I was thinking. The smock had the crotch-strap to stop the wind getting up underneath (and presumably protect the wotsits from freezing), so some equivalent piece of protection would presumably have been used. A new tunic in jungle green, or converted Demison? Who knows.
