I got all focussed and finished the casino earlier than expected:

Contrary to appearances, the casino is a fairly new building, in fact it’s the first on the island. this is why the mysterious investors didn’t bother with am original name, or indeed in cleaning the outside.

Rumour has it that they are spending a fair bit of money maintaining their monopoly, There are stories of ‘lobbying’ behind closed doors involving envelopes full of cash to make sure this remains the only legal gambling establishment on the island. Several groups have come to the island to invest in similar establishments, but all seem to be refused a licence and occasionally decide to leave the island very suddenly, sometimes without even taking the time to pack.

Of course in the spirit of enterprise that made the Empire great, a number of ‘freelance’ groups are quietly offering alternatives, outside of the jurisdiction of the civil authorities. One has even rather cheekily advertised upcoming fixtures on the wall of the casino.

That's probably your most atmospheric piece so far.

I love the building and I love the backstory….

Is it possible that some of the disappointed wannabe alternative investors who "left the island very suddenly" actually didn’t leave the island at all but are residents in perpetuity (and not in a good way)?

I love this Deco styled building! It sounds like you are modeling your backstory on the casino on Saipan  lol
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Very nice, great build but also a very atmospheric building. I like the way you are mixing printed textures with homemade textures, it works well.
Cheers

Many thanks for the kind comments (although I'm afraid dancing girls will have to wait).

I'm going to concentrate on some scatter terrain for a bit, but I'm collecting ideas for the the next "big" project, which at the moment will probably be a bank, or a small plane, so our characters have something to rob and a means of escaping the island. Suggestions for both are welcome. For the bank I'm thinking of a similar style to this kind of building, if a bit smaller.

As to the plane, I'll probably start with something small. I like Biplanes and am irrationally fond of the Fiat CR 42 but I think I probably should make something that could feasibly take several people at once. Any suggestions?

For a super-pulpy plane, several years ago I scored a "Wings of Texaco" 1/50 scale Lockheed Electra Jr metal bank for a semi-decent price from EBay.  I still need to remove the Texaco logo and add an Air France seahorse.

Air France never actually flew this plane, but that was the logo on the one in the final scene of Casablanca!

Here's a current listing to show you the packaging to look for:

I suspect your problem will be size vs scale, vs cost.
The Ford Trimotor would give you capacity, the Lockheed would be half the size, the Avro Anson might me more available.

How much do you want to spend?

For the bank, I think the Ziterdes one can be useful. It has a single floor but another can be bought separately (photo).  :)

Hello again, and thanks for your thoughts.

I suspect your problem will be size vs scale, vs cost.
The Ford Trimotor would give you capacity, the Lockheed would be half the size, the Avro Anson might me more available.

I've made a sketch of a Danish SAI KZ IV plane ([ur=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAI_KZ_IVl]Wiki link here[/url]) on a Din A4 page. It fits at 1:55 scale, just: the wingspan works out at about 290mm and the body is about 175mm.

I won't be making an exact model of any plane but more of a "based on" or possibly "looks similar to" model. From a distance.  if you squint.  I'll probably use the grey card that the casino is made from, so I guess I'd better buy another pack...

It's similar to the Lockheed Electra but built a bit sooner so it has fixed undercarriage.
