Right, let us pass another milestone in Rohan. I finished the Riders with bows last night, varnished and based today. With that I have only a few models left to do for this project; paint the last four javelin riders and build and paint another eight riders with hand weapons. Once that is done I am pretty much done with what I had planned for this list. I may come back later and add some monsters and creatures for AoM, if I can find something good. Maybe some 40mm horses as maeras?

Anyway, here we are, eight riders with bows. Oathmark horses and bodies, Victrix heads and weapons. Greenstuff cloaks.

Those are great! I especially like the rider who is picking an arrow from the quiver- I don’t think I have seen one in that pose before. Excellent kitbashes and painting!

All right, these should be pretty much the last Rohan builds for now (well, I have one more model incoming, more on that in a sec). Seven Warriors with mounts but no javelins for when I play the Rohirrim as Horde in Age of Magic. For variety I used a few Oathmark heads on these, the rest is the standard Fireforge Turcopole horse and body, Victrix arms, weapons and bits.

Super pleased that I found the turcopole set and I almost wish I had got that rigth away. Only issue has been a lack of full length left arms in the Victrix kits. I want to be able to build some of those minis as well, can't take all their arms you know? A little bit too long into building this unit I realised that I could trim the lower arm from the gambesson shoulders and replace with the partial arms from Victrix vikings, since those are plentiful. Looks pretty neat right?

But Ogrob, why seven? Surely Warriors in SAGA come in bunches of eight? Indeed they do, and I did have eight turcopole bodies lined up to build but then my clumsy self dropped a leg into the black void that is my hobby room floor, so now I have seven. I figure I will fill out the unit with the Footsore Aethelflaed or, if it lines up in size, with the new mini I just ordered from Stronghold Terrain, that may just be the final mini for this project.

Enough chat, on with pictures:

The figures look great! Interesting observation about shortening some arms to take the surplus Viking parts- it looks like it worked well.

I laughed a couple of times when reading this post. First about “dropping a leg into the black hole of the hobby room floor”. I’ve done that many times in my own hobby space and have no explanation for where the parts go - it is one of the mysteries!

The second time was when I read “final mini of the project”. I’ve heard about that, but it seems like sightings of unicorns or jackalopes- a mythical beast. There is always another figure. Then another. Then it’s a unit!

Joking aside, great work on the Host of Rohan, it’s a beautiful collection.

Great work again!

Your cloak-sculpting is also really impressive as well!

Another day, another post as I'm somehow making good progress on this project. Got the four Turcopole-Rohirrim painted, and snapped some a comparison and a group shot with the Reconquer and V&V/Victrix minis I had previously made. Looks pretty good all together I think, but if you look carefully you can see that the Fireforge horses are a bit chunkier than the Reconquer, with Victrix falling in between.

Yeah, What Grumpy said.

I looked carefully at the horses and they look well within the size variation for horses. I didn’t find the differences between manufacturers jarring, especially with the consistent painting and basing.

Yep. Horses look fine given there's a good range, but the basing & weapons are all the same. Same-sized gear is always a near-perfect recipe for making scale variations look natural.

The horse sizes look great together - not all horses are exactly the same size in real life anyway. Great painting too by the way - a fantastic looking force.

Thanks fellas! Happy with these, let's see how long it takes to paint their javelin-less friends and then I think it is time for another army shot and some terrain work.
