Dr Marcus: Episode 2
« on: July 16, 2009, 04:35:53 PM »
Last night we continued the adventures of Dr Marcus and co.

Prologue

A loud knock startled Dr Marcus from deep thought. He cautiously crept to the door and drew his pistol from the holster. His left hand turned the key in the door and slowly opened it, his trusty pistol concealed behind the door. Marcus breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of the bellboy carrying his breakfast.
“Good morning sir, I brought your breakfast up just like you asked for. Continental today sir, and today’s issue of the Observer.” The Bellboy was eager to please the strange man who arrived last night covered in blood and paid handsomely for a room and anonymity.

“Very good, set it on the table.” Marcus slipped the pistol back into its holster reaching instead into his pocket, pulling out a few bills and handing them to the boy.

“For your trouble.” The boy accepted the money with a thanks and hurriedly left the room.

Sitting down to breakfast, Marcus casually read the paper. First reading an article about the incident last night in which his name was mentioned. It seemed that it was a good idea to hired a hotel for a few days. Another story attracted his attention, and after reading it Marcus laid the paper on the table and made his was over to the phone. Picking up the receiver he dialed the familiar number.

“Jack, we have a problem.”

Gamer Mac supplied the photographs, thanks again Colin. I hope to post the full write up later.

Cheers
Andy

Episode 2: The Rescue

Team 1- The University of Chicago Archaeological Society
Dr Edwin Marcus (Grade 3 Professor)
Professor Harun Al-Omar (Grade 3 Professor)
Jack Avery (Grade 3 Industrialist)
Sarah O’Connell (Grade 3 Private Investigator)
Wullie Murphie (Grade 3 Prize Fighter)

Team 2- The American International Intelligence Agency
Captain Howard Black (Grade 3 G-Man)
Ex-private Hugh Johnson (Grade 3 War Veteran)
Sergeant Max Simpson (Grade 3 Allied Officer)
Specialist Travis Roberts (Grade 3 Allied Officer) Played by Gamer Mac.

Last time we left Dr Marcus and company he’d narrowly escaped from an attempted kidnapping. It seemed that he wasn’t the only faculty member than Chianti’s gang had targeted- Professor Skinner, an expert in hieroglyphics, had disappeared over the small hours of the night. Professor Skinner had been doing some work for the society on translating some ancient texts which they’d discovered- the work was vital to their next dig. Naturally the Archaeologists suspected Don Chianti of the kidnapping and traveled across town to raid his hide-out.

Meanwhile the agents of the AIIA, received their next mission. Captain Black’s superiors had received information about Professor Skinner’s disappearance. The agent’s orders where to ensure that Skinner wasn’t handed over to the gangster’s employer, the agency was worried about their high profile rescue of Dr Marcus the night before and felt that this mission should be covert. The quartermaster equipped the team with silenced pistols. The agents where given a second condition to their mission, Dr Marcus must survive.  Additionally the agents where told they had a man studying the movements of Chianti’s people and a rendezvous with him would be likely to prove fruitful.

Since the Archaeologists picked up the newspaper clipping detailing a gangland war in the warehouse district they knew where Don Chianti’s hide-out was and so got the choice of where to set up (Represented by the green square). The AIIA agents had to set up in a corner of the board (represented by the red square).
The AIIA got to start the first round as they technically won the last game. The agents split into two smaller groups, Hugh Johnson and Sergeant Simpson, headed down the long edge of the board, to search for the their man, while Captain Black and Specialist Roberts headed down the short edge of the table. Specialist Roberts found a ladder and started to explore roof tops.

Meanwhile the archaeologist snuck around the back of the hide-out and charged the guard. They where quickly able to drop the guard in combat, and sneak in the back door.  Needless to say the grade 1 Bruno wasn’t able to withstand Wullie the Prizefighter and his three accomplaces (due to the speed with which the group dropped the Bruno and because they done it in close combat I ruled that the alarm was not raised).

With Specialist Travis Roberts exploring the roof tops, Captain Black stealthily moved into position to take out on of the guards at the front of the building. With Black in position, Dr Marcus moved to deal with the second guard. The alarm was raised as Black and Dr Marcus’s shot broke the silence of the night. The sudden attack was two much for the guards, and one panic and fled, while the grade 2 enforcer fell unconscious from a couple of expertly aimed shots.

As the rest of the archaeologists where sneaking up to the second floor, they heard the shots and knew that the alarm had been raised. On the second floor Sarah O’Connell came across Don Chianti (Grade 3 Mob Boss) and Tony Costello & Mike Lucini (Half-grade Mooks). The Mooks didn’t survive Wullie’s fists, or Sarah and Jack’s pistols for long, both dropping before they could prove to be much of a threat. Don Chianti took a couple of hits from Professor Harun’s shotgun- things where looking decidedly grim for the mob-boss.

Mean while Sergeant Simpson and Dr Marcus headed to the park where they encountered the AIIA’s informer. The informer had been watching the gangster’s moves and had seen Professor Skinner getting moved into another building before the Americans arrived. At the same time the unfortunate Specialist Roberts entered the building holding the Professor from the roof. Specialist Roberts had just walked into the wasp’s nest on his own. Four gangster where guarding Skinner, including Mario Gucci (Grade 2 Enforcer), two Gat men (with a SMG and a shotgun), and a Bruno. Specialist Roberts received four shots to the arms and fled back up the stairs, followed closely by the Bruno.

Back in the main hide-out Don Chianti was disarmed by Wullie Murphy. Murphy and Prof. Harun then presented Don Chianti with one option show them where the professor is being kept and he’ll walk out alive. Yet another poor roll from me, and the Don bottled it, telling the archaeologists all he knew. The Archaeologist then decided to use the Don as a bargaining chip.

On the street things where getting hot, Captain Black was fighting Mario Gucci in hand to hand, Spec. Roberts was still fighting the Bruno on the roof, and the two gat men where hidden behind cover. As the archaeologists brought the Don into the street they called for the gangsters to surrender- Mario Gucci looked at the Don with a look of disgust and calling him craven he said “I’m the Don now!”

We ran out of time and didn’t complete the game. Even as I type this the game lies on my living room table ready to be finished on Wednesday.

I think the game went quite well; although I had a minor problem when I lost the stats for Don Chianti and the two enforcers. I did manage to work on the buildings a bit more, and hopefully the pictures are a bit better!

Over the course of the game I managed to forget that some of the gangsters had special rules (including Ignore Pain, and intimidate!) and I also was forgetting to make rolls for grade 2’s to become conscious again!

Wow ok, quite a long post; I’ll hopefully post the remainder of the game after Wednesday!

Cheers
Andy

Good looking urban board, and it sounds like a good game - pity you ran out of time to finish it, but remember the grand old pulpish tradition of ending an episode with a thrilling cliffhanger!

That's an awful lot of Grade 3 characters - 27 points total on the two allied teams! No wonder your 1/2 Grade Mooks don't survive very long!

Nice one. Lots of action and a good gaming board. Did you built the houses on your own? Because they sure look good (I don't mean that as any comment on your modelling skill, I'm just curious).

And please post the second part asap...  :D

Episode 2: The Rescue

Team 2- The American International Intelligence Agency

Specialist Travis Roberts (Grade 3 Allied Officer) Played by Gamer Mac.

Andy this is not how I remember it at all
The correct version of events -
Specialist Roberts used his tactical intuition to take the high ground. His intuition paid off – he spotted the kidnapped professor being held by four gangsters through a gap in the roof top door. Seeing the rest of his team involved in pointless distractions and not caring for his own safety but only concerned with completing the mission, Specialist Roberts cocked his trusty Tommy gun and staring death in the face charged down the stairs through the hail of incoming bullets. Spraying his Tommy gun left and right he managed to make the leader of the group run in fear of his life out into the street. Realising that there was a risk of the professor getting hit in the crossfire Specialist Roberts then used a tactical retreat back up the stairs drawing the gangsters after him to leave the Professor safe. :D
Job done lol

You don't need to thank me for putting you right ;)

The grand tradition of "re-writing" the events to fit the good pulp story. :)

Excellent game and the pictures look great. Your terrain is really coming along.

Thanks all, it's been a fun game  :D

@Wirelizard; 9 grade 3 models are quite alot- but they've not always been working as a coherent group- although they haven't shot at each other yet. I didn't expect the 1/2 grades to last long, but I was really surprised at how quickly they died.

@Doomhippie; Thanks for the kind words. The Terrain is coming along but I doubt I'll ever be able to reach anywhere near te standard of some other on this board. The houses are all based off of Matakishi's excellent tutorial. I've increased the sizes slightly (Doors are around 30mm wide to allow bases to fit in/out, the walls are all 50mm high) and I bought some brick textured plastic card which I stuck onto the cork.

@GMac; I seem to remember a worried look on your face when you discovered the Professor and the four gangsters guarding him  ;D. But history is generally written by the victors so I'll allow you, your spin!  lol

@ Operator 5; Thank you for the kind words, the pictures where Colin's creations and I cannot take any credit for them (thanks again Colin!). And as for the re-writing of events... well you know what certain players are like! Just kidding of course!  lol

Cheers

A long time in the waiting but, we finished the game last Wednesday....

Unfortunately my camera hadn't arrived from Jessops yet grr!!!  >:( >:( >:( (I'm still waiting!). So sadly no pictures where taken.

We managed to finish episode 2, and start episode 3.

here is the final part of the second episode.

Episode 2 continued...
Enraged Don Chianti turned around and punched Professor Harun, while Luigi Gucci (the Grade 2 Enforcer guarding the front of the gangster's hide out) picked himself up off the ground and turned his SMG on ex-private Hugh Johnson.

With Professor Skinner so close, all the members of the AIIA and the Archaeological society started to converge on the building where he was being held. A furious fire fight erupted between the gangsters and the would be rescuers.

Meanwhile on the roof of the building Specialist Travis Roberts and the Bruno where still slugging it out. Roberts was in a bad way, he'd received a few hits to the arms and his prowess has decreased because of this. While the firefight below was going the heroes way, the fight on the roof wasn't.

Mario Gucci had seen enough- he was currently fighting Captain Black, while the rest of the mob where being gun down. Mario decided it was time for decisive action- he shouted for his brother to flee, shoulder-barged past the Captain and sped down a back alley way to safety.

Seeing some of the gangsters fleeing, Wullie ran across the road and hid- waiting for his opportunity. It didn't take long to present itself and the gangster armed with the shotgun leaned out of the window and took a shot and Professor Harun. Wullie immediately grabbed the shotgun from the unsuspecting gangster. Taken totally by surprise, the gangster decide to save his own life and ran off.

Meanwhile Jack Avery had managed to get into the building where Prof. Skinner was being held, and with the supporting fire of Wullie and Dr Marcus, escaped with the prisoner.

Well the game lasted a lot longer than I though it would have. The official winners of the game where the Archaeologists, who gave the AIIA a bit of a showing up!

Highlights included, Wullies impressive disarming of the shot-gunner.

I'll post some of the write up for Episode 3 later tonight (maybe) although there are no pictures!

Cheers
Andy
