Last time I played Starship Trooper (or the VSF variant Steamship Trooper) I needed about 200 bugs.
The price for suitable plastic or metal figures was huge, but I was lucky enough to find a PDF of a warrior bug that can be printed onto card, cut out and quickly assembled to produce an acceptable hoard of bugs that menace most 28mm figures.

Irregular Minis:
http://irregularminiatures.co.uk/25mmRanges/25mmSci-fi%20bug%20hunt.htm
The Cave Bugs and scoprion and spider bugs look interesting, but simplistic. On the plus side, easy to paint

I’ve been looking at “bug” miniatures and came across this…figured I’d answer for posterity, and re-open the tread for any cool bugs in the interim

I have a bunch of the "Final Faction" bug aliens from Dollar Tree.
They repaint easily, and well.  I have some pictures of them here;

I also use bags of cheap ants I got off of Amazon for the games where I need hordes of the things.
They aren't really accurate, so are sort of alien, plus their comparatively huge. They aren't well sculpted, but sometimes quantity is needed more.
You can see them in use here;

EDIT: I had the wrong name for the figure line.

These guys from Warlord are quite interesting:

They're probably more of an active opfor than what you're after though.

I've been considering 40K Tyranids, but figure there may be a cheaper option out there;
You can check ebay for 2nd hand ones.

For the idea of plastic ants. I once ordered 10 pieces of toy cockroaches for my postapo project from China, half euro per piece or so. Turned out that 1 piece is actually a bag of 10, so I ended up with 100 plastic cockroaches...
