Martian Flora
« on: October 07, 2009, 04:28:26 AM »
Can anyone point me at easy to create Martian plant ideas? I need to make some 'reddery' for a game I am putting on next month, and I am drawing a blank as to what to do for plants and small forest areas.

How about aquarium plants with a whaft of red spray paint and then an orangey drybrush on top. For the red weed you might want to have a look in some kitchen shops and see what sort of red pan scrubbers/dish mops etc. they have and cut them up roughly. That might work  :)

Piccies when you have them please  :D

I always use the artificial house plants, and these are often tinted in strange colors. If you have a hobby/floral store in your area like a Hobby Lobby or Michael's they may have plastic plants in shades of blue, orange, purple, and red. The pieces below were made for a jungle I am working on, but I put a few of the clolored plants in as well --

HAVE FUN!   :)

I used various things for my martian flora in our War of the Worlds on Mars display. Here is the link to pictures.

http://littleleadmenofvalour.blogspot.com/2009/08/nunawading-wargames-open-day-2009.html

The large red cactus type plants were plastic capsicum(peppers) with ends cut off. The large beehive things and weird plant were picked up in a florist plastic plant section and the different types of red weed and mosses were hobby shop red lichen and flock.
The red lichen was my favourite bit.

The downside of using the capsicum was that people wouldn't look at the tripod or aeronefs and would stare at the plants and then say " ummmm  are they capsicum?" You wouldn't believe how many times we were asked that question.

Cheers

Aside form all this useful scratchbuilding advice, I'd also recommend Ramshackle Games' Mutant Plants for a bit of variety and strangeness.  :)

I'm liking these ideas. When I get around to doing mine I'd also like tube shaped  flora, for want of a better image Wheat Crunchies is the sort of shape I mean:

A friend of mine gets good results from the dried seed pods and ferns that can be bought from florist shops and some discount stores. He mounts them on bases, sprays them in a variety of weird and wonderful shades, gives them a coat of varnish and they're good to go.  :)

I knew there was a reason I loved you guys. Your help is much appreciated - and especially for the terragenesis stuff - I had forgotten about that website.

And yes, I'll put pictures up when I am done. Sheesh. Like they will even stand out when you have Captain Blood doing full boards and Grimm around doing jungle.

You might also hit the local Michaels store.  They have all their "fall" plants up, which run red to red/brown.  They have little villages like the christams one, only for fall, and the a few red leaf trees might add alot to the forrest.  You coud always paint the trunk something different.

I love some of the ones that Rabbitz uses in our games. The most effective are the dried seed pods, which he bought from a flower place.

I feel that wheat crunchies might be consumed during our games by the voracious Prussian appetite...
