Obi Wan and tabletop gaming
« on: June 06, 2022, 08:42:59 PM »
 :o
I just watched the first three episodes and was shocked when I became aware that there was no thread discussing the series for what it’s worth and the gaming possibilities.

I enjoyed it so far though the last part was neither paced nor staged very well. The inquisitors make good henchmen for smaller skirmishes in the Star Wars universe. Vader cannot be eveywhere, right?

However: Surprised I am why Obi is so weak. Are a couple of stormies really a theat for him? Can you unlearn the force?

Hello DivisMal,

I think that after various Star Wars threads going south (in particular Boba Fett, which I started) members have become wary. This is the way.

There's lots of problems with them all, but they are still watchable and enjoyable. I was dishearten to hear about the controversy over Mosses Ingram as the 3rd sister and even though I am not so keen on the character she is doing an OK job (and as far as racist stuff goes …just uncalled  for) I do like little Leah and her line " more like grandfather" well delivered and funny.  And I like Lo La59 so much that I bought one https://hasbropulse.com/products/star-wars-l0-la59-lola-animatronic-edition Nice addition to my collections.  And I am sure some gaming will be done once they come out with the miniatures.

The first two episodes were sort of ok, but I was glad things finally picked up some pace in the 3rd installment.

There are already some waves on how it's possible that the Grand Inquisitor dies when he clearly appears years later in Rebels, but I suspect they knew that going in, and he'll make a comeback in this series.

As for Obi Wan not being able to take down those troopers; it's been made clear that he's secluded himself and that he's suffering from a bad case of PTSD. He has given up on being a Jedi, and everything reminding him of his failure as one has a huge impact on his functioning; he's basically a broken man; he still believes he killed his best friend.

I was a bit turned off by the slow pace and the drudgery of his life in the first two episodes, but I think that was on purpose to showcase just how far he has fallen down the well of self-pitty and -loathing.

My expectations are that he'll rediscover himself over the course of the series and come out much stronger.

Oh, I and I was really surprised by the depiction of Owen Lars; a much stronger individual than the original trilogy led us to believe!

Also, I'm pretty sure I saw a DeeDee (R5-DD) cameo in episode 3, just when Obi Wan and Leia exit the cargo ship! 8)  You know; DeeDee, the sassy astromech from Pink Five fame?  Which would mean that Pink Five might be canon again too!  :D

It's mostly flat surfaces and simple geometry. Seach your feelings, you know you want to...  :D

I've been enjoying it, but like others have noted, these threads can go to the dark side :-[

I did like the 3rd Sister doing the parkour moves, as leaping over tall buildings seems to be a force thing. It's much easier in cartoons, so nice to see them taking the time to do it in a live action setting.

I have the Inquisitor figure from Star Wars Imperial Assault, although I haven't painted it. Most of the light sabres from that game are very bendy and need replaced, which I haven't done yet.

I haven't seen much in the way of gaming opportunities so far (only watched the first two episodes), but it did make me wonder about an RPG in that setting. I have a couple of Star Wars RPGs, but never played them. Edge of the Empire seems most appropriate, but so many pages to read :o

I always enjoy the world building aspects of these shows, so that tends to keep me watching, even if some of the episodes are a bit iffy :)

I’m enjoying it. Way better than The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett at any rate.
This seems a bit more grown up, and somehow feels closer to the vibe of the Star Wars movies proper.
One or two characters feel a bit off.
But overall, I like it.

It's better than Boba Fett, but worse than the Mandalorian.  It is probably raising more questions than solving so far.  It feels very much like it is retconning the original Star Wars films, quite heavily.

Also, I thought the Empire was always xenophobic, humans first.  Weird seeing aliens who like them.  I think having humans in those roles would have gone better.  However, good to see there are those who do like the Empire.  The rebellion, at times, was very small.  That indicates that at least a notable part of the population are loyalists (at the beginning stages of the American Revolution, it's been said it was roughly 1/3rd loyalists, 1/3rd rebel, 1/3rd in the middle) at some point.

That said, from a gaming perspective, I think there are things here.  The alien market on the not-Blade Runner planet would make some great terrain, and sneaking through the crowds to escape could make for a good scenario.  Also could be interesting to have a 'jedi' or wizard with unreliable powers having to complete some objective.  Lastly, again using some sort of port/bazar table, have the players be a group of cops/inquisitors/soldiers/other having to weed through the crowd to find the assassin/crook/fugitive/etc.

Any of those three would go really well with FFoL/GH

I'm enjoying it, I think I'm still eight in my head so any Star Wars is going to be worth the watch for me.

I like the idea that Obi Wan went a bit off the grid, and think McGregor is doing a good job of getting his uncertainty across. Its weird to see a hero like Kenobi actually scared but doing what he feels is right anyway.

Yes, there's a couple of beats that don't quite gel with the whole, but nothing so far has made me want to stop watching it.

Although I did shout at the TV when he spent so long trying to deactivate the roadblock when he could have just walked round the end... worked on the Maginot Line after all...

I quite like it so far, but the first couple of episodes were ruined by me trying to get the picture right on my new TV (bloody Disney Channel reset all the picture settings and made it look like a cheap Doctor Who episode). Again, I hope Obi Wan gets his groove back a bit more, because it's really hard watching him try to reach for the Jedi skills he once had, but has deliberately let rust over the last decade.

Also, is anyone else worried that ten years after she was born, Leia appears to be a five year old girl?

I’m enjoying it.  Hmmn, have to come up with conversions for the Inquisitors in 15mm!
