just checked Matakishis stuff, and those are roughly 29mm to the top of the head, so not much difference there, but now that I compared them on the screen, M's minis have much smaller heads...

Can't decide  >:(

I have mine ordered.  I dont mind taking the chance, I am sure that the ridged rim alien figures will be well within parameters for my games :)

If nobody else has ordered any (which I very much doubt) I can put up comparison photos with some Matakishi and MegaMinis not-Starfleet figures once the Ridged Rim guys have shown up.

Now that the UK postal strike is over I hope to get my six ridged rim guys by the end of next week so I can do it then if people still want it.

So long as they aren't midgets there size shouldn't be a problem. After all with the odd exception most Kli...  - oops - real Pastie-heads appear to be big strapping chaps (especially the females) so if they are a bit bigger than the other figures that's a good thing  :)

Yes, I did say "real".

I am a sad geek  ::)

My six Gary Mitchell "Ridged Rim" aliens arrived at work this morning.  I ordered last Thursday, they shipped on Friday and the arrived in Ireland on Monday.  Cant ask for much better than that :)

Conveniently I had both my camera and a couple of figures suitable for "Ridged Rim" games at work with me for a comparison shot.  Somewhat less conveniently I havent got around to assembling the Matakishi figures yet so the comparison shot is of a head and armless figue.  It should be enough for any of you who may be on the fence regarding Ridged Rim purchases though.

Left to right: L to R: Gary Mitchell, Matakishi, Gary Mitchell, MegaMinis, Gary Mitchell.

Although the proprtions on the different ranges are slightly different (as is nearly always the case with different manufacturers) the three ranges are well within acceptable parameters for me, which is great.  If anything the ridged rims are a little larger.  This is also fine with me.  As Gluteus Maximus said earlier, the boys from not-Kronos look better if they are on the large side.

The largest ridged rim guy (centre above) has pretty short arms.  its irritating but not a deal breaker.  The rest of the ridged rims have better proportioned arms more like the guy on the right.

The GM figures are almost entirely mouldline and flash free, which is cool.  My female bat'leth weilding figure (not pictured) is missing a very small part of one of the inner prongs of the blade, where the mould appears not to have filled fully.  It is pretty minor and as I plan to square these guys up against xenomorphs and genestealers I will probably paint it to look like it has been attacked by acid blood or something. Again, its a minor thing.

I am very happy with my purchase, it is nice to have some 28mm figures that are so immediately recognisable as probably the most popular and entertaining races from the franchise.  In particular I like that the six figure range is split down the middle with regard to sex.  It fits with the show in general and the species in particular.  I hope that if GM continue to make figures inspired by the same franchise that they stick with the same male/female ratio [ geekmode ] (barring Ferengi of course) [ / geekmode ]

Thanks, Cheetor, that's a very useful pic! Hmmm, those arms are short. First time I've noticed, but no worries.

It's good to have the Megaminis figure in there too, as I've never seen one in comparison to other ranges.

GM's and the MM figures are now firmly on my wants list  :D

Thanks for the generous offer Ben, but it really isnt necessary.  The imperfection is so minor as to be inconsequential.  I even slightly regret mentioning it now.

If you want me to mail you a picture for your own QC purposes or something like that then no problem, but I wont be needing a replacement figure.  It really doesnt warrant it.  The reason that you missed it was because it was such a small thing.

Not that I dont appreciate the offer and the comprehensive customer service you understand :)

If you check my original photos, the bat'leths are also missing those prongs. Maybe the mould needs adjusting?

MegaMinis figure quality can vary a great deal.  The bottom end of some of their ranges are really quite ugly.  On the other hand I like a lot of their figures and buy from them regularly, partly because their prices are very competitive and their international shipping is the best around.  MegaMinis figures are more 25mm than 28mm generally speaking and definitely dont qualify as "heroic scale", which also has a bearing on how much interest I have in various ranges.

The Megaminis Starship Crew (including the guy in the picture above) is definitely in the top half of their stuff I think, even though they are a little small.  The other figures that I am planning to use for this project are also a little on the small side so thats fine.  I mean, how tall is a "real" Gorn/robot/Klingon anyway?  ;)

The MM guys are more than suitable for making up a security team of redshirts destined to die horribly in a variety of surroundings in my opinion.  The uniform isnt a perfect match for 60's Trek (as the Matakishi guys are) but it is close enough for my plans.  They can also be ready for painting in about 1/4 of the time it takes to get the Matakishi guys together (due to the general "fiddlyness" of the Matakishi guys, as mentioned on their page at the Teahouse).

I am glad to have both sets for some variety while painting.

I found that I could carefully file and sand the jacket "zipper" detail off the front of the Mega minis crew figures to give them more of an original Star Trek look.  They are still not quite an exact match, but they are closer.

Hi

I guess I will have to check closer :) I will have to have a check on the mould and have a chat with Gary.

I have been doing exactly that too :)

Once that is done the only differences between the MegaMinis and the Matakishi figures is that the collar is a little "squarer" and the absence of the badge.  Both of thise things are minor enough to be ignored for my purposes.

Do you have any of your figures painted up yet?  I would love to see some photos if you do.

If this board had an "embarrassed" smiley, I would use it at this point.

Last summer, I bought the Matakishi figures, saw the new ST movie, and got all excited about painting up some TOS crew.
But I got distracted by some other shiny objects.   So, they are on my  "to do" list.  At some point...   lol

There used to be one on the old site. I think I used it so much I broke it  :(

I think that the "embarassed" smiley is included by default whenever anyone on this site announces a new project: it almost inevitably means that a handful of other projects have been temporarily dropped.

I dropped my Space Samurai, my post apoc guys and some Elves (amongst a whole load of other stuff) to get the Star Trek stuff assembled.  Focussed? Me? Not so much.

Watching 60s Trek on the laptop while assembling them this week has slowed down progress, but increased enthusiasm.  I have about three more to assemble and clean up (I have found that the Matakishis take ages and are a little fragile in the end.  Fiddly, as the man himself warned before purchase :) ).  I hope to get started painting them on Saturday... maybe.  I have a lot of gaming plans and I think that I have nearly all of the basic figures that I need... except...

I need a Khan.  Preferably the Tina Turner haired, big ol' pecs on show "Wrath of Khan" version.  I would settle for the jumpsuited, greasy black haired 60s TV version but as the movie version is more recognisable, I would rather something like that.

Anyone have any ideas for a figure?  I presume that there is a post-apoc figure out there somewhere that is suitable without having to do too much (ie any) conversion work.

Assuming that nobody objects to a very slight derailment of this thread...
