Having long been a dungeon fan following hundreds of hours gaming in the 1990s with Diablo 1, then D2. I've had the itch to play some table top dungeon crawls, with the howl of beasts wailing in my mind and doors creeping open as I have moved through day to day tasks. Occasionally the line "fresh meat" wakes me from my daydream in a slight panic. The hunger has grown until I cannot hold it back any longer.. i must.. carve.. a dungeon.
Speaking with some mates recently they pointed me to a new dungeon ruleset and that was all I needed, jumping in on kickstarter (Torch and Shield for those so interested) now I need to make a dungeon to play on before it arrives early next year.

Having ambitions of something quite special and looking at the many amazing offerings out on the internet and here in LAF, I decided to just keep it simple 2.5D and go with some modular tiles and forget the walls. It all seemed too tricky! As while adding to the beauty and immersiveness, the walls seem to make pudgy fingers a problem and limit the playability somewhat.
And so with that a trip to the hardware store and art shop resulted in a hoard of 3mm foam and 4mm mdf to get started.

I went 1.5inch as a base unit to accommodate the larger monster bases, and AoS skirmish bases now often provided.

I went with a 3mm or 4mm mdf to help reduce warpage and gave them a light spray primer and sealer to help reduce moisture absorption.
Cutting up 3mm foam sheets (I found paperless corefoam what a win) into 1.5inch squares I have them the rock tumbler treatment and then white glued down onto the grid. Once dried I added extra texture from the rocks, and painted with modpodge to seal the foam.

I mixed the modgepodge with a dark blue to tint the shadows and let me see where i had painted.

Despite having a gritty diablo setting in mind as the painting progressed it became a more fancy marble cathedral like floor with some inspiration from hero quest, the red and blue floors a homage to the diablo colouring.
Starting with a beige, greens and dry brushing, followed by brown wash and black wash and some more dry brushing. I'm rather happy how the stone floors came out, if not quite what i had in mind at the start.
Next is some scatter and some access points...
